Our Verdict

You can fly from the east coast to Spain for ~17k miles in business class. There’s still too much uncertainty for this to be an appealing promotion for me, travel restrictions are changing on a regular basis it’s not worth the small amount of effort involved for myself.

can you keep moving miles back and forth between iberia and BA? How long does the transfer take? (Also, when i spoke to BA they said my email differs on iberia’s account – id need to update it so they match and that would take up to 3 days to approve the update!)

I have moved Avios back and forth between BA and IB a few times (and the Aer Lingus program), and once you get the browsers/web-pages working correctly then it is effectively instantaneous – maybe takes a few minutes to show the transfer on both ends. I think I have a blocker that causes issues (maybe the Brave browser?) and the Iberia site always seems to be a bit of a crap shoot, but once you get to the transfer page and everything loads, transfers work fine.

Regarding the email difference, I know nothing about it. A few years ago, Iberia did not like my street address so it was impossible to get them to match, but I think that is resolved now.

There’s obviously some risk in booking this, but you can fly through March 15. You probably want to delay your trip as long as possible given the current COVID rules. If they’re actually flying next year but you don’t want to go, you can cancel for something like 25 bucks. So the monetary risk is very low. It’s 27,000 miles to Israel. The weather isn’t perfect in early March but you’re not getting to TLV for 27000 miles in business class any other way. I would note that you have to fly Iberia, and Iberia’s USA network isn’t very robust right now I wouldn’t bother with this offer if you had to fly to an Iberia gateway. You also have to deal with getting your miles to the Iberia program (probably doable with a phone call). Dan has more details on this deal.

Last week I booked LAX-MAD for June But trying not to get too excited as I’m not even confident we’ll be able to take that trip… early 2021 seems like a hard no.

More like a “who knows.” COVID is receding and getting to equilibrium between the US and the EU, so I’m somewhat hopeful there will be some movement on reopening transatlantic travel. This summer’s USA situation pretty much proves that if your city has already had a COVID outbreak you don’t reignite local COVID by hosting travellers from higher COVID areas. For example, the Sunbelt spike had zero impact on the Northeast. But this requires a willingness to look at data and science and not everyone — including New York’s governor — is predisposed to doing this.

If you already have Avios then this isn’t a bad deal but I don’t think I’d transfer points over to take advantage of this unless you have a very high confidence you’ll be able to travel (dual citizen, etc.). Otherwise I’d consider this a fairly speculative booking given the deal dates for those in the US at least.

March 15, 2021 I assume, not 2020?
