Southwest has devalued redeeming points for gift cards, previously you’d get 1¢ per point but now a $100 gift card will cost you 15,000 points. Earlier this year Southwest removed the gift card option due to COVID-19. Southwest points are more valuable when redeeming for travel on Southwest, but it’s always nice to have this ‘cashout (giftcard out)’ floor of 1¢ per point.

A blow to the small number of people who were collecting RR points to use for gift cards. I would think that about 99% of RR members would find better value using them for free tickets.

They never stopped allowing GCs, they just took down the links. You could still follow the links from old emails etc. But Amazon GCs haven’t been in stock for a long time.

Even the 1¢ per point wasn’t very useful once they took away most useful GCs such as Amazon.
I don’t like what this says about the future redemption value for flights.
Yep, have been debating whether to turn my flight credit into points but this isn’t looking good. A $300 flight will likely be a $300 flight (or less) next summer but a 12,000 pt flight might be completely different!
Avi, sitting on 250K RR pts, I have a similar concerns. Less so because it’s LUV and they do have are the healthiest balance sheet of the US carriers.
BUT the recent promo for a 2021 CP SUBwith $6K spend – does make me a bit more concerned.
Just need AA to bring back gift cards. Need to start that clock again
