Hertz Discontinuing The Ability To Earn Airline Miles Instead Of Hertz Points

Car rental company Hertz is discounting the ability to earn airline miles instead of Hertz points. Reddit user jocall56 was having difficulties with their account with this option selected and a call agent stated that the ability to earn miles has been removed and accounts with that option selected are not working properly due to this. Hertz recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy so this is likely a cost cutting measure.

Yeah I’ve had similar account issues a few months ago in which I couldn’t book if I wasn’t opted into their reward program (which means I couldn’t earn miles then). Ultimate solution was to opt in…

I wonder if the ongoing United 2000+ miles per rental promo is included or exempt from this. For this United promo, you earn United miles through Hertz but you HAVE TO book through United Cars:

https://cars.united.com/partners/integrations/landing-pages/united-v2/?adplat=cars&adcamp=searchpromo

and United Cars then sends the reservation to Hertz. And with an intermediate or higher class car rented for 2 or more days, you earn at least 2000 miles (a bit more if you have a Chase United card or status at United).

As far as I know, that promo (which has kept getting renewed every few months for the last couple years at least) has been the “richest” current miles promo I know of for any airline with any car rental agency.

I did a rental last month and after seeing Hertz points appear and no SkyMiles, I called Hertz and was told the same thing. I complained to Delta since both the Hertz and Delta websites still flaunt the earnings as a perk for Medallion members. I got a call back from Delta the next day and was told they called and confirmed with Hertz that this was the case due to their bankruptcy filing but I would still earn the Hertz points.

Oddly enough, a few days later those 1250 Hertz SkyMiles showed up in my Delta account. There was an announcement a while back that they were discontinuing transfers to frequent flyer accounts. I wonder if the award issuance for rentals might just be delayed, and the phone agents are confused about transfers versus reward earning?

And that would probably explain why I got 19 lousy Hertz points instead of 1000 VS miles on a recent rental.

Wonder if they ran out of some kinds of miles before others. This was always a pretty laughable earn rate anyway, but it was non-zero.

That sucks. Hertz points are worth very little and I liked getting the 600 Southwest miles per rental.

They’re worth a lot if you bank enough for a week rental. That’s the sweet spot, especially weekly rentals out in the western US states were prices can be quite high in the summer ($400+), due to national parks and family travel.

Yeah but you also only earn 1 pt/dollar and my rentals are more like $100-200 so it’s not just point valuation is lowered but also you earn significantly less points.
