Plastiq Now Allows American Express Card for Business & Professional Services and more

American Express has expanded the types of payments they allow for use with the Plastiq bill payment service. Previously they only allowed things like taxes, tuition, and rent. They’ve now added many types of business payments for professional services, business services, construction, and select inventory payments.

Plastiq users have always been able to pay for certain bills with an American Express card. But now, you can now use it even more for expenses like:

  • Professional and business services
  • Construction
  • Wholesale inventory

Make sure to check out the full list for specifics on what you can pay for with AMEX and Plastiq. If you have an American Express card, these new options should help you keep more cash on hand and better manage your finances.

They have a really exhaustive list at that link showing various types of payments and which ones are allowed with which payment type. It seems that many business payments are still not allowed, e.g. paying your gardener or graphic designer. Yet many business payments are now allowed, such as paying your contractor, computer programmer, exterminator, lawyer, accountant, and paying for select types of inventory purchases.

These additions will be extremely useful to some. We’ll update our Plastiq review with this change. You can find full details on Plastiq in our original Plastiq review.

Doesn’t seem to work. I selected Construction & Maintenance, and then they want a sub-category. Then they say it can’t be paid for with Amex and link you to their site that says you can.

OK, so seems their list is a bit vague. There’s a PDF that breaks things down *slightly* better. So if you choose Construction & Maintenance, and then they make you choose a subcateogry (not listed on their website unless you find the PDF) of: Landscaping and Gardening, it’s denied. The PDF has Landscaping listed under “business services” with a red X. Their PDF does NOT list what’s allowed under Construction, though.

Anybody know if paying contractors (house painters, etc) will work with this?

Well, that’s always good news!

These were the previous rules, if anyone’s curious: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/handy-chart-from-plastiq-to-clarify-which-cards-can-be-used-for-which-payments/#comment-732337

Does anyone know if Plastiq allows making a payment on a car loan with the new terms (with Amex, or any other types of cards?) I believe it was prohibited with Amex before, but allowed with MC/Visa – no idea what it is now. It doesn’t seem to be explicitly mentioned in the PDF, weirdly enough. Assuming that Plastiq blocks car loan payments, are there other services that would allow making a car loan payment with an Amex?

I paid a lot of car loan payments from Plastiq with Chase and BOFA Visa. But that was in 2020.

I don’t know if any one else experienced similar issue, but I have been using Plastiq primarily to pay monthly mortgage. I got lucky when plastiq did a mistake and allowed the processing fees to be 1.5%. I scheduled my mortgage payments for almost 3 years with 1.5% fees. All of a sudden there was a fraudulent transaction on the credit card which was used only for plastiq payments. So the credit card company sent a text to confirm the transaction and since I said no to whether I recognize the transaction, they cancelled the existing credit card and issued a new one. So when I tried to update my CC info on plastiq, the fees reverted to 2.85%. I am trying to figure out how a credit card used only for plastiq transactions can have a fraudulent transaction. I guess in the end, I am done with Plastiq since 2.85% is too much. Enjoyed while it lasted.

They did this to me 2x (the cards were used other places than plastiq)

The first time I emailed and they honored the prices – there was like 3 payments left. The second time, when I had years of low rates locked in, they rejected me immediately and decisively. Interestingly, the 2nd time I only got 1-2 payments in before the fraud.

Does this mean, plastiq is deliberately initiating the fraudulent transactions, knowing that people will cancel the credit cards? seems like a shady practice

Idk if this is new or not, but it looks like Student Loans are completely removed from all types of debit and credit cards according to the link in the post. This past summer, when I tried paying federal student loans with an AMEX it was denied, but it worked fine in October with PPK.

I have been paying student loans with visa debit without issue, last payment was this morning, 4/16/21.

Haven’t tried any other iteration.

I was just coming here to say this. I used PPK to pay Navient directly (by phone) with Chase cards as recently as April 1. Not sure if the new cash-like restrictions will make those payments cash advances, so I’m waiting for more DPs before doing it again.

I’ve been using Plastiq to pay my HOA for almost two years now. I have it listed as rent I guess.

Until you said that I didn’t realize they took away any categories. HOA/Condo Fees was a permitted category for AmEx on the last chart (at least when I viewed it 4/4). That appears to be the only removal so maybe it was an oversight? We can hope.

Bummer – Paying a year’s worth of HOA/Condo fees was my go-to expense for high Amex MSRs.
