[Update] Citi Now Allowing Product Changes to the new Citi Custom Cash Card (Double Cash, Dividend, Expedia, Etc.)

(Update 4/3/22: It’s possible to hold more than one Custom Cash via product change, per many reader reports. Useful for doubling up on the 5% categories limit. I guess the terms limiting one are for new applicants.)

(Update 4/1/22: Multiple reports of Double Cash now being converted to the Custom Cash card. Finally!)

People are now successfully product changing their Citi cards to become the new Custom Cash card. Readers in the comments report being able to product change their Expedia, Rewards+, Drivers Edge Charter, Diamond Preferred, Premier, Prestige, Preferred, AT&T, Dividend, and American Airlines AAdvantage cards to become a Custom Cash card.

Double Cash cards are also working, since April 1, 2022. can not yet be product changed to Custom Cash, though you can try changing it over to a Rewards+ and from there to change it to a Custom Cash (update: success). Some people heard from reps that Double Cash will be able to be converted directly to Custom Cash beginning August 1, 2021. Citi Simplicity is a mixed bag with some having success product changing and others being told the August 1st date for doing that product change.

The big question remains whether your card number will change when you product change to the Custom Cash, which might depend on which card you are changing. This matters because, officially, whenever the card number changes it would be considered a ‘card closed’ to reset your 24/48 month clock, whereas if the card number remains the same it won’t reset the clock. You can search the comments below for data points on when the card number will change from a particular card, or you can ask the Citi rep and hope for the best. I’d guess that product changes from cobrands (e.g. AA to Custom Cash) will get a new card number, but product changes from within the ThankYou family (e.g. Preferred to Custom Cash) might keep the same number.

The Custom Cash card uses the ThankYou points system and allows points to also be cashed out at 1 cent per point. The card launched in June and initially was not accepting product changes, but today they began allowing them. When you product change to the card you won’t get the signup bonus, but some people prefer doing it anyone to avoid signing up for a new card. Reports are that the product change can even be done via chat.

Card has to be at least 366 (more than 365) days old to convert. If your card has an annual fee, you can get it refunded after it posts if you convert or cancel within 30 (60?) days. So, conversion to another card is possible but account needs to be at least a year old.

I was finally able to get three Custom Cash cards!
8/25: Product change from Citi Premier to Custom Cash
9/23: Tried to product change Double Cash and/or Rewards+ to Custom Cash. Was not an option. Both are >3 years old (>2 years since last product change).
12/26: Product change from Citi Double Cash and Rewards+ to Custom Cash

Tried to product change today by phone and was denied. I don’t have any Custom Cash cards. The rep listed just about every other Citi card (including Costco and the AAdvantage cards) as product change options but said that a conversion to Custom Cash wasn’t possible. It looks like others have posted similar stories online. Is this over?

I called in a few days ago and converted my Double Cash with no hiccups. It’s my second Custom Cash card.

Received my 1st custom cash today in the mail. I also downgraded my city premier to another custom cash over the phone today, so now I have 2. Card number stayed the same and points transfer over to the new card. Was told that the annual Fee on the premier will be refunded in 51 days as statement credit.

The Custom Cash webpage still says it’s Citi policy to only issue one Custom Cash per customer. Is anyone worried about duplicate Custom Cards getting shut down in the future? My family member had two Citi Dividends and one of them got randomly shut down (neither was really being used at the time, and the one with the smaller limit got closed).

Will I be able to keep my already earned thank you points from expiring by downgrading from thank you preferred to custom cash card? When calling the service line the CSR said yes but I wonder if anyone else could confirm that is indeed the case? If not I may have to transfer the points now to another loyalty program now then downgrade. Looks only FlyBlue has some transfer promo at this point.
