Update 9/12/22: Deal is back from 9/11/22 – 9/24/22 (ht Keith)

Update 4/4/22: Deal is back and will run April 18-30, 2022

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Target is offering 20% off a new car seat, car seat base, travel system, stroller or select baby home gear when you trade in an old car seat from April 18-30, 2022

Our Verdict

This is a semi frequent offer, we’ve seen Walmart offer $30 gift cards in the past but that hasn’t happened in many years. Car seats have a plastic that expire, so generally not a good idea to buy a used one.

What is “select baby gear” in this context? Does it include wipes?

Found the answer in the Offer FAQ: playards, high chairs, swings, rockers, bouncers, walkers, entertainers, and jumpers

You final note is correct about buying used car seats.

Another reason you wouldn’t want to buy a used one from someone you don’t know: all car seats have an accident limit before they are considered no longer safe (ex: 1 or more airbags deploy in a fender bender, door damage to the side of the vehicle that the seat is on, etc). Manufacturers publish this data generally.

There’s no way to know if a car seat is still safe after an accident without the company’s inspection, and generally that’s not even done. No way to know if someone is lying to you about being in an accident.

Totally agree on, say, a bike helmet that absorbs an impact. A car seat only holds a kid in the right position. That’s why the HTSA tests the belts and metal frames, but not the plastic and padding.

Definitely carefully inspect a used car seat. I’d probably replace the LATCHes, as they have moving parts that could wear out or be damaged by user error, and I’m a little OCD.

Beyond that, I’d stress about the age of the harness in a used car seat about as much as I’d stress about the age of the seatbelt in a used car. It’s not zero, but worry about it waaay down the list after stairs, bathtubs, things they can tip over, etc.

“hehe why yes of course be sure to trade in your car seat, haha why yes don’t buy them used!!! Who knows what might happen to them!! Test them? Oh no, we’d never do that! Imagine what would happen to our market if people just could sell their seats to someone with a younger child! Why we’d hardly make any money!!!!”

You are free to keep your car seat and use it however long you want. But the expiration date is what absolves the company from being indefinitely liable for their product not functioning as expected.

Something as expensive as a car doesn’t come with an unlimited guaranty, why should a hunk of plastic be any different?

You don’t need to trade in. If you go to the baby aisle, you could see the offer, trade in and get 20% off. Just scan the code with Target app. It will be saved to Target circle offer.
If you want to do this deal online, without stepping to the store, go to slickdeals and search for this deal. Go to post #76. Scan the code. That’s what I did.
