[Update] Chase Freedom & Freedom Flex Q4 2021 Categories: PayPal & Walmart

Update 10/6/21: Reader Greg lets us know that that not all Walmart are working automatically to get the 5x points. Specifically, Walmart Supercenters which codes as Grocery Store, Supermarkets” don’t seem to be working. You can possibly get manual credit, but might want to avoid the hassle. Can also just buy $1,500 in Walmart gift cards online and use them at any Walmart store or Sam’s Club or Walmart/Sam’s gas stations. (1, 2) Update 10/10/21: Reader Ryan suggests a different theory that small purchases are not posting correctly while large purchases are.

Original Post:

Chase has released the 5x categories for the fourth quarter of 2021 on the Freedom and Freedom Flex cards:

  • PayPal
  • Walmart

I love the PayPal category since it’s pretty easy to use at thousands of online merchants, tax payments, charities, etc. Should work in conjunction with PayPal Key as well.

These categories will go live for activation tomorrow, but are already showing in the online login.

Does anyone know if Venmo purchases qualify for this quarterly PayPal 5% cash back? Or PayPal only?

while you may double dip on Paypal/grocery at 9% for this 4th Q, is the 5% cash back topped out at $1500 in total spend? or i.e. $1500 on Paypal spent and $1500 on Home Improvement, which may total $150 cash back? Thanks.

Is anyone showing credit for PayPal key transactions? I’ve made a dozen transactions but still have $0 earned in my 5% cashback dashboard so wondering if it is limited to direct PayPal checkout.

Same experience last quarter with Discovery card. Haven’t tried chase, but probably the same.

Is this working for anyone else?

Received 5% using PPK last quarter on Discover without issue. Haven’t tried with Freedom yet.

PayPal Key transactions are not showing up in my cashback counter, but each individual PPK transaction shows the 4% bonus points. The counter was wonky for me last quarter too.

Two purchases, same store, both time self check-out. One time it coded as Supercenter (no 5x), the other time coded as Walmart and got 5x.

Yet another purchase via regular register, coded as Supercenter, no 5x. Purchased electronics worth several hundred dollars.

Oct 3rd I did a Walmart Neighborhood Market purchase ($27, not $506.95) and it does say groceries on the card statement/list of charges in online banking, but when I go to the rewards section (https://ultimaterewardspoints.chase.com/rewards-activity) it shows the charge hitting the 4th Qtr Walmart category. “+ Bonus from 4Q 5% category: Walmart”

I haven’t tried a Supercenter, but I think this post may be a case of crying wolf, or Chase was quick to fix it.  Chuck
