Pay Utilities Fee-Free with a Credit Card on Plastiq

The Offer

Direct Link (this is FrequentMiler’s referral link)

  • Pay your utility bills with a Mastercard credit/debit card and pay no processing fee at all. Must schedule 6 or more payments to get this offer.

The Fine Print

  • Must use a referral link to get this rate. (We included FrequentMiler’s link above. You can also find a link on ViewFromTheWing and other sites.) If you signed up previously for the 1.99% Plastiq promo, then you’re automatically included in this offer as well.
  • Mastercard payments only get the 0% fee. Amex is 1.99% and Visa is 2.5%.
  • U.S.-based utilities only.

Our Verdict

Many utility bills can be paid with a credit card directly. If you have a bill that doesn’t allow credit card payments, this is a really nice deal.

Question is how long it will last. You should be able to schedule out payments for a while if the bill is a recurring amount. You can also set up payments to go out more often than once-per-month in order to hit the 6-requirement.

Utilities – Definition

Plastiq writes a definition of ‘utilities’ as including the following: Water, Electric, Waste (Garbage / Sewage), and Gas/Propane.

If you guys wouldn’t mind signing up for Plastiq under my link, I could really use the help as I recently had some large medical bills I am trying to pay off. It will also give you a bonus of 225 FFD

So far experience with Plastiq is not promising at all.
My first transaction took two weeks to post to my utility company.
I wrote to CEO on my concern of getting late fee charged for an unusual delay in payment posting. He took 3 days to reply saying somebody will help. I have not heard back since then.
I will not use this service as primary bill payment as its not ready for prime time. It may cost you more in late fees rather then saving your time and money.

Can you start collecting data points for which credit cards have been used for Plastiq without incurring cash advance fees?

Hi everyone,

Regarding variations in monthly utilities bill, we recommend setting an amount now that is the normal/approximate amount you pay each month, and then the utility company will pass on credit to your account for the next month you overpay and/or will add more to your bill for the next month if you underpay.

And as always, if you have an urgent issue or question, please email [email protected] or chat us when you login to the app.

Best,
Rebecca

The fact that your bill varies month to month really creates a bit of a headache in terms of the setup…

Well, the only MC I have is Sears and it earns some lousy sears points.
800 points (earned by spending $800) gives me $5 sears gift card.
Anybody could make more by making a few payments to a utility company from their Discover rewards checking account ($0.10 per bill payment).

Barclaycard Arrival is 2.2% soon to be 2.1% and it’s a MC. Discover IT is effectively a 1% doubled to 2% card for a year if you sign up new, no annual fee. That avoids Citi.

Mine does not code as cash advance. If you are worried, you can call your credit card and set cash advance limit to $0.

Takes over a month to have the bill paid to your landlord and pay 3% Citi credit card cash advance fee? No thank you.

Check to see if your utility company has something called “budget billing.” Mine will let you pay the same amount every month and then adjust it every six months to your usage. Might be a decent way to set up recurring payments.

Regardless, I don’t trust Plastiq to get checks places on time. My only attempt with them got there eight days late. So if you do this, send the check as early as possible.
