[Expired] [Targeted Email Offer] Upgrade Chase Freedom To Sapphire Preferred, Get $95 or 10,000 Points

The Offer

Check your email for the following offer:

  • Upgrade your Chase Freedom card to a Sapphire Preferred card and get a $95 statement credit after your first purchase.
  • Others got an offer for 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points instead.

Our Verdict

Both are nice offers, obviously the 10,000 points offer will be significantly better for most people. I don’t recall Chase sending out this kind of offer before, it’s more of an Amex thing, yet this targeted email offer is being mentioned by many people. Some people might hesitate to lose the 5x reward categories with the upgrade.

Update: Just a word of caution – some readers have expressed concern that this product change bonus might be considered a signup bonus with regards to resetting the 48-month signup bonus time-frame.

I received an offer with apparently no bonus of any kind (fee waiver, points), and I already have the CSP. I deleted the e-mail.

Seems like very bad deal. Just keep the Chase Freedom with no AF and open up the Chase Sapphire anew with a much bigger SUP.

Will that work (CSP signon bonus of 60k pts) if i downgraded my CSP to CFFlex in last 48months? (I think i downgraded in Dec2020)

It’s all depends on if it’s been 4 years since you got your CSP bonus.

I wonder if this offer is only for people that do not have CSP or CSR currently. Otherwise, that would mean they would start allowing 2/48 conflict with two Sapphire credit cards.

Having multiple cards doesn’t violate the 48-month rule, which deals only with the interval between SUBs.

I had the old version of the Freedom card, the plain vanilla one. I waited and never got any offers on that. So I just closed it and few days later applied for the Unlimited one.
Are they sending this upgrade offer for the original Freedom card or even the newer versions? thanks

No, the whole point of these offers are to get people out of the discontinued-for-new-applications Freedom card. Chase has a habit of doing these kinds of offers for cards they’ve discontinued for new applications.

They auto upgraded my freedom card to freedom unlimited with the only offer of lowering the APR’s.

The OG freedom with 5% rotating categories to FU? I’m not sure I would call that an upgrade.

“upgrade”
they did the same to me. I was about to p/c to a freedom flex, but then realized the SUB for opening a new one is better so I just closed it.

I see, valid point, thanks For someone like me though, who doesnt spend much and has trouble keeping track of different categories, it doesnt seem to matter that much. I always end up using the wrong credit card in the wrong place 🙂

Same, just an offer to upgrade to get the benefits of CSP. “Offer” expires 12/31. Hard pass.

same here,……already have a CSP so I doubt that would’ve been helpful at all!

If you’re at all far into the 48-month waiting period for a new CSR/CSP SUB, I would be very wary of taking this offer. I wouldn’t put it past Chase to reset the SUB clock even though doing this is a product change, not a new account.

This is my main concern as well. Would be curious to know if there’s a way to confirm if this will reset the clock or not.

I would be wary of projecting issues with Citi onto Chase as they are different banks.

A few years ago people reported getting a 1099 for a Marriott card upgrade bonus. This suggests Chase upgrade offers are coded differently in their system from a new cardmember bonus as an other bonus/bank compensation that is also used for referrals and retentions.
