Timing the Purchase
We posted a list of many gift card sales on eBay, see eBay Gift Sales for Labor Day, Conoco, Restaurants, and More. They’re calling it a Labor Day sale which leads me to believe that this sale will be going on into next week. This is important since based on previous experience it’s likely that there’ll be an increased eBay Bucks offer within the next week, see Ebay Bucks, Gift Card Deals, & Timing Your eBay Purchases. This can make previously unprofitable resale ideas into very profitable resale ideas. Or if you want to keep the gift card for yourself, it makes it an even better deal.
[UPDATE: The end time is now showing as some time on Tuesday morning September 8, 2015.]
I’m especially optimistic about getting a bonus Bucks deal (and a good one) due to Labor Day coming soon. They tend to give the bonus offers especially around holidays and the like.
It’s important to note, however, that while the official end-date of the sale is probably not until sometime next week, there are limited quantities available. If those quantities run out, they make not replenish them.
Bear in Mind…
- The Paypal Digital Gifts purchases should earn 5x with INK. The others will not.
- Remember to go through a portal for an additional 1.2% cashback.
- You’ll earn 2% back in eBay Bucks or more via targeted offers. As noted, we may get lucky to get a targeted offer within the week.
- If you intend to resell the cards, remember that resale prices are constantly in flux and it may not be the same a week later or even an hour later.
Let’s take a look at the resale option here…
Conoco’s Gas Gift Cards
The gas gift card deals are always popular. You can use these cards at Conoco, 76 Gas, or Phillips 66 Gas. You may be surprised to find out that you have one of these station near you!
From a reselling perspective, these cards are currently selling at up to 87% of their value. That makes it around break-even on resale after accounting for the Bucks and portal. If you have some eBay gift cards you want to use up, this can be a way of doing that.
One interesting aspect here is that in the past some people had success submitting Phillips 66 cards as 76 Gas cards. The 76, Conoco, and Phillips 66 cards are interchangable and some exchanges may accept the Conoco cards as 76 Gas cards. If you can pull that off, it starts looking a lot better as you can get up to 92%Â [UPDATE: up to 90%] on 76 Gas cards.
In the final analysis, I wouldn’t recommend relying on that, but you can try it out if you wish.
Cabela’s Gift Cards
These cards weren’t showing initially, but they were quickly added. Many of you are probably familiar with Cabela’s gift cards since they’ve been on sale many times from SVM.
From a resale perspective, the rates have gone down on some of the exchanges, but it’s still possible to get 81% from ABC Gift Cards. That makes this a 1% moneymaker, before accounting for any portal, Bucks, or credit card cashback.
UPDATE: @demflyers points out that ABC Gift Cards is now only offering 76% on Cabela’s.
Jiffy Lube Gift Cards
These cards can be sold for up to 76% and come close to a break-even resale rate. If we end up with bonus Bucks some time this week, this deal can be a winner. Prices hold pretty steady too on Jiffy Lube, I believe.
Papa John’s Gift Cards
These are e-gift cards which make earning on them tougher. If you have bulk seller status on some of the exchanges, that could help with this problem since they may allow electronic submission. Saveya allows electronic submission from everyone.
An example resale on these cards can be to sell to Saveya for 76.5%. This will bring you to almost to break-even resale after accounting for the portal and eBay Bucks. You’ll net the INK points on the deal, or – better yet – you’ll use up eBay gift cards on the deal.
(Another idea could be Steak N Shake gift cards, but those require physical submission at Saveya which makes them a tough resale idea.)
Final Thoughts
The best idea here is probably the Conoco gas cards, mostly for someone who has eBay gift cards to use up.
Personally, I’m not buying anything yet. I’ll keep an eye on the available quantities (using the technique outlined here) in the hopes that we’ll have a bonus Bucks offer coming soon.
If we do get the bonus Bucks offer, I’ll grab the Conoco, Cabela’s, Jiffy Lube, Papa John’s, and maybe some others, depending how good the Bucks offer is.
I wish there was something I could use but Costco gas in Hawaii is sill cheaper than a discounted gas gift card.
I was skeptical but I was able to sell Philips 66 cards to ABC as 76. I didn’t ask, just sent them in and hoped for the best; it worked.
However, I currently have an issue receiving payment for 3 other gas cards sent to ABC. They oddly paid me for only one and didn’t contact me with further information. I’ve tried to contact them for over a week and their phone line always rings busy and I haven’t had an email returned
Was it something similar to selling Phillips 66 as a 76 gas card
Finally talked to ABC and they say two of my cards showed a zero balance. Frustrating. Contacting SVM now through eBay to try to sort it out. The card numbers on these things are ridiculously easy to guess, Im not surprised there is fraud. Its trivial to guess sequential numbers and then create a card with a bar code or mag stripe on it
PSA: Looks like giftcardzen has capped payouts to $300 a week. But they may be paying same price for electronic and mail in.
I noticed on GCW this morning that GCZ now offers electronic payout. They offer the same price for electronic and physical like Save Ya does. Why would anyone choose physical in that instance?
Thanks for the heads up. I’ve reached out to GCZ to clarify.
Under the landing for the Conoco deal, it does say “Today Only”. I’m not sure if all of these will last to next week. The others may have the same text, I didn’t look that far. Careful!
Thanks, now it’s showing that we have until Tuesday 9/8. Seems to have been updated.
Cabela’s is 76% at ABC…
Hi Chuck,
Did you get the resale values from Gift Card Granny? The rates don’t seem to be accurate – giftcardwiki is showing the correct values of 90% and 76% for “76 Gas” and Cabela’s, respectively. I also went directly to ABC’s website to confirm the rates.
Thanks, updated.
