Update 3/1/23: Extended until March 31, 2023.
The Offer
- M1 is offering a brokerage bonus of up to $10,000. The amount you receive depends on the amount you transfer:
- $250 bonus when you transfer $50,000 – $249,999
- $1,000 bonus when you transfer $250,000 – $499,999
- $2,000 bonus when you transfer $500,000 – $999,999
- $4,000 bonus when you transfer $1,000,000 – $1,999,999
- $10,000 bonus when you transfer $2,000,000
The Fine Print
- Promotion Period: December 27, 2022 (12:00 AM EST) through February 28, 2023 (11:59 PM EST).
- During the Promotion Period, this promotional offer is valid for new and existing M1 customers who successfully complete an Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (“ACATS”) of at least $50,000 in aggregate (“Transfer Account Value1”) during the Promotion Period (the “Winter Promotion”). The appropriate M1 account must receive instructions to complete an ACATS prior to expiry of the Promotion Period. Any unsuccessful ACATS will be deemed ineligible. This offer is non-transferable, and not valid with any of the following: (i) internal transfers, (ii) ACH deposits (bank transfers), (iii) wire transfers, or (iv) direct 401(k) rollovers.
- Cryptocurrency is not eligible for ACATS. Additionally, any security transferred via ACATS that is not traded by M1 will be liquidated, including but not limited to Mutual Funds and Over-The-Counter securities.
- If you satisfy the aforementioned conditions, M1 will make a one-time deposit into the cash balance of your M1 taxable investment account equal to the applicable Promotional Credit2 based on the aggregate Transfer Account Value1 (see table below) on December 5, 2023 (the “Payout Date”), however, the following accounts are ineligible to receive any Promotional Credit: any retirement, custodial or trust accounts. The “Transfer Account Value” is determined as the current market value of all holdings and cash transferred during this Promotion Period, in aggregate, on the day the transfer is completed to the qualifying account which must remain equal to, or greater than, the value after the net deposit was made (minus any losses due to trading, market volatility or margin debit balances) at time of the Payout Date. Reallocation of any Transfer Account Value funds transferred for this Winter Promotion either externally, or internally to any other M1 services (e.g., M1 Spend), prior to the Payout Date will disqualify you from the Winter Promotion. The Promotion Credit deposited by M1 is a fixed cash value and does not constitute stock or any other security, nor is it a recommendation to buy any specific stock or other security. M1 Finance may charge the account for the cost of the offer at its sole discretion. M1 reserves the right to restrict or revoke this offer at any time. This is not an offer or solicitation in any jurisdiction where we are not authorized to do business.
Our Verdict
Looks like funds need to be kept in the account until December 5, 2023. Previously the tiers were much more attractive. I’d recommend doing one of the better brokerage bonuses available.
Hat tip to Fred
William Charles Chuck There is also a $100 referral offer on this account – the only requirement is to initially fund the Invest account with $5,000 and maintain the balance for 30 days. Since the larger “transfer” promotion is eligible for existing customers, it should stack.
Their marketing team is on the ball. /sarcasm William Charles Chuck
Received a snail mail postcard yesterday advertising this link: https://m1.com/transfer/promo-4000/
It’s much worse than the link in the above post, and very much expired. The postcard says the expiration is 1/14/23 to transfer assets. (webpage says it’s already done)
Thanks to DoC, I know better.
A new postcard from M1 arrived in my mailbox yesterday… this time with the right promo. https://m1.com/transfer/promo-10000
Did similar deal about a year ago, for the lowest tier. Had to wait 9 months to get bonus. For this, you have to wait until Dec 2023! ACAT in only (i.e., no ACH) qualifies. ACAT out fee is $65+ if I recall. And of course the bonus is fully taxable. Their site is primitive with few features, with very limited trading capabilities, and only in stock/etfs. I don’t bother with their “slices”. No integrated support/messaging, you have to go to a separate site to message them (unless they changed recently)! Cringeworthy in this day and age. I don’t think I was ever able to get my bank connected.
Do IRA transfers count? In one place it says retirement accounts work. Another place it sounds like the $1000 or $2000 or whatever can’t be deposited into an IRA (presumably you open a taxable brokerage account to receive the bonus money?)
50K in the bank right now risk-free gets you $166 a month at 4%.
Brokerage. bonus.
And this is a poor one.
Brokerage bonuses and bank interest shouldn’t be directly compared. Save maybe for the cash crowd, who should generally move on. One could park in a treasury ETF and yield income + bonus too.
It wasn’t that long ago when $1k for $200-$250k was pretty solid for brokerage bonuses. At the low end, this isn’t very good. But overall it’s decent/middling.
M1 support and ACAT out fee may not make it worth the hassle though.
Wow that’s great…Which bank are you using ???
Why old tier is more attractive? Looks the new tier is better. Here is the old tier structure:
$50,000 – $499,999.99 for $500
$500,000 – $999,999.99 for $1,000
$1,000,000 – $1,999,999.99 for $2,500
$2,000,000 – $4,999,999.99 for $4,000
$5,000,000 +for $5,000
I’d say the new promotion is not the best, but also not bad at all.
I think most people here would go for the $50k tier, which was better with the previous promo. The holding period for payout was shorter too. savingwizard
Because of the 50k tier
Seems like they want to focus on mid 6 figure+ customers. Agreed that $1k for $250K or $2k for $500 use to be considered pretty good. After Public’s offer expires in the next couple days, I think the massive transfer offer gravy train is going to normalize back to lower offers.
Bonus structure not attractive for most people.
yeah there really should be a simple macro that allows DoC headlines to translate brokerage bonuses into the bracket the reader finds himself
Or maybe just put a range William Charles ? The top line bonuses are usually never applicable to people. 7 figures is more Bogleheads forum bonus discussion.
their customer service is really bad, not worth the hassle for the promo
I’ll second this. Had to follow up for 1-2 months with them constantly before finally getting my bonuses.
Thanks for posting your experience. I wont do it if I have to chase them down.
Thanks for posting that. I was thinking about this. Mainly to park some securities.
Did you already do Public? You have 1-2 days to initiate (unless they extend). Their tiers are better.
Went from being very attractive to now being lost in the sea of meh brokerage bonuses. Definitely a pass.
