The American Express Business Platinum card comes with a $200 Dell credit twice per year. A reader sent in a tip that they made a Dell charge immediately before closing the card. The Dell credit posted a few days after the account was closed. Good to keep in mind for when the timing is tight. YMMV
I’d guess the same would hold true for the airline incidental credit or the wireless credit. And similar for the Saks credit on the personal Platinum card. Hopefully others will chime in below with their experiences on these and other credits.
Update: comments seem to confirm that this usually works with all types of Amex credits – Dell, Saks, airline, Walmart+, etc. Provided that the charge fully posts to your statement before closing out the account you should hopefully get the account credit to post after the card closure. YMMV
Can anyone else comment on this as of recent? I was an idiot and haven’t made a Dell purchase until 4 days ago. Item shipped and received but no Dell credit yet. I have only until tomorrow to cancel the card to get my $695 annual fee refund.
what was your experience?
I had $50 Saks charge 3 days before I closed the card but was never reimbursed
I had a dining charge on my Bonvoy Brilliant like 3 days before I closed the card that was never reimbursed.
A dining charge on the same card that was 1 day prior was reimbursed.
I’ve had it only be pending , not fully posted, and it worked once
How do you get money back after you close your account? Do you pay the card down to 0 balance before closing, and then when the credit posts, you get a check in the mail for the refunded amount? Do you have to call them to request a check? Or how does it work?
If you have a separate Amex card you can transfer the positive balance over to that card. that’s the only option I’ve done, but I believe you can also request a check.
It’s automated now, you don’t even have to talk with anyone. Just find the credit balance refund option on the Amex website (the chat bot will send you there if you ask for it) and fill out the form. It asks you how you would like to receive your refund. For some reason, Amex processes the credit balance refund through their dispute system, but don’t worry, you aren’t filing a real dispute. After filling out the form, a “dispute” goes pending and gets approved a few days later. You can request a check or a credit on one of your other cards. The check takes around 10 days or so to come in the mail.
You can also chat with amex and have it refunded back to your bank acct.
Can i triple dip Dell credits by applying biz plat in May?
Why not quadruple when you apply in December?
I have a contrary point (despite your update) – charged 2X$100 United travelbank 6 days before closing personal Platinum card and they were never reimbursed (the Saks charge I did 6 days before closing card was reimbursed the daybefore the card closure)
Yeah, you can easily take advantage of this. Just need to have a little patience. In my opinion, I don’t think you should do this, focus on better things! Keep strong
The Saks credit definitely posts after closing the card, I can confirm it multiple times. In each case, the credit came a few days after the account was closed and annual fee had been refunded. However, the charge itself had posted before I closed the cards. Remember that Saks charges when the item ships, not when you place the order, so you need to give yourself a few days.
Good to know, what about the FHC 200usd credit in prepaid stays on the personal Plat? I got scared and closed it w o booking it but I want to know for next time…
when I closed mine the $200 credit did eventually show up.
