Chase had paused applications for the Chase Starbucks card in June, 2022 but it now looks like the card will be completely discontinued and cardholders converted to the Chase Freedom Unlimited. A reader with the card reports receiving a letter stating that the transition will happen on July 20, 2023.
The original Chase Starbucks card was launched in 2018 but wasn’t able to gain much traction. It will be interesting to see if Starbucks partners with another co-branded partner to issue a new card.
I have the Starbucks card and got the letter. I’ve never had a freedom card, so I should probably cancel before this converts right? So that if I eventually choose to get the freedom card I’d be able to get a SUB on it instead of just being converted to it with no bonus? Or is this a card that wouldn’t really have a bonus anyway?
I am no longer using my Starbucks Visa card . I will keep it for the 400 Stars in August and then canceling it. I have no use for the new card.
This truly sucks. I am going to miss my monthly free drink after August.
Starbucks is doing horrible. They increased the rewards tiers from 50 to 100 points now they terminate their co branded card.
This is unrelated, but I have a BOGO drink free offer that expires on 4/12. Not sure if it’s targeted.
I’ve been ignoring the various free and discounted $10 Starbucks reloads I got from Paypal, Amex, and sweepstakes games years ago, and now that Starbucks seems to be shitting itself dry in the customer loyalty department I should probably spend those reloads before Starbucks decides to devalue its own USD gift cards.
Overpriced coffee card hit hard in the new economy
You should see the lines. Starbucks is doing just fine.
I never wanted this product but I was always hoping that Chase would have added Starbucks as a UR transfer partner. Even at 2:1 it would have been a solid deal.
A 2:1 conversion rate wouldn’t have made any sense, even after the most recent SR devaluation.
Exchanging 400 UR points for the souped up equivalent of a $10 venti espresso drink would have been “unbeliebable value” according to TPG while being a massive liability to Chase.
ME TOO
I’m having a bit of deja-vu…the last Starbucks/Chase partnership ended with the Duetto becoming a Freedom in 2010…does this mean Starbucks and Chase will try again in 2031?
Many of us (and especially those who got the 6,500 star signup bonus) feel the Starbucks VISA was a great choice during COVID when airline miles and hotel points weren’t needed due to reduced travel. The card provided excellent immediate value for earning and redeeming rewards. And it even participated in CHASE offers too (like the $35 in free AT&T accessories and 10% back at Office Depot/Max). A solid win for coffee lovers.
I have this card. Worth the 49 dollar annual fee, you get one drink a month plus typically more in November and December. I was hoping that they would provide some stars as a parting gift when they shut down the prepaid card
Was that benefit added later on? The initial launch was extremely underwhelming
Edit: Nvm I think you’re referring to Barista picks
They are providing a gift of 400 stars within 2 weeks of 07/20.
I got the same letter, except they are moving my card to Chase Freedom, not Unlimited. I will have two Chase Freedoms as a result.
When you say Chase Freedom, do you mean the new Chase Freedom Flex, or does it appear to truly be the original, discontinued Chase Freedom?
You can probably request it be product changed once you get the Freedom – core cards can be changed between all the Slates, Freedoms, and Sapphires. It’s a little surprising you’re being converted to the old Freedom, which new customers can’t directly sign up for.
I somehow have 4 Freedoms, and its great for maximizing 5% categories.
I have 5 somehow.
I call the fifth one Fifth Freedom.
This is basically what the future of their DoorDash card holds.
At least that doesn’t have an annual fee… who is paying $99 for a Starbucks card?
You obviously never applied for any of the recent versions of the card or even bothered googling, otherwise you’d know that the AF was $0 the first year and $49 thereafter.
No one is. No one ever has. No one ever will.
Because the annual fee for the Starbucks Visa has never been $99.
Can all boomers see the future or just you?
