This is my first time getting targeted for a Hertz offer. I’m in the middle of a 250+ rental. Easy 5k points. Thanks for sharing these

I never had an issue with Hertz, probably because I’m PC for quite a few years now, even though I never rent that many time… But it would suck if you don’t get this offer on Plat… My Schwab Plat didn’t get it. But luckily my Biz Plat did.

Hello.
I’ve always used my Chase Sapphire because of the insurance. Can I still use it, and when I check the car in, switch to my Blue Business to trigger the offer, if possible?

Yes, I’ve tried it once that I booked the reservation with CSP and switched to Freedom for 5x rewards when I returned the car. You must wait in line and have the counter to help you switch payment though.

If the charge is not on the card, it will not offer any benefit. Amex’s premium rental coverage might be worth it for some. You can think of it as buying points for a small fee, with added insurance benefit…

CSR holder here. Reserve the vehicle with whichever card you choose, but the coverage is with the card that is used to pay for the rental. First, it’s NOT insurance – card and rental company offer loss/collision damage waivers, property insurance is a Federally-regulated industry and card issuers cannot provide insurance for vehicles or property in those vehicles. The CSR CDW is outlined in the Benefits Guide, first subject matter addressed; the CDW is provided by the card underwriter, in the CSR’s case it’s Visa. RTFM.

For AMEX, I hold a Gold and personal Platinum, with each having their own damage waiver coverage. AMEX partners for some of their cards with a regulated insurance company for its add-on insurance for an additional per-rental fee.

Hertz always tries to sneak in charges on me although still better than Avis and their dirty franchisee brand Budget. Enterprise is always my top choice

Hertz tried to charge me an additional $250 for gas (returned with a full tank) and add-ons that I never signed up for. Shady company.

Still not worth the risk of having Hertz trying to have me arrested.

People routinely make comments like this, and I can’t tell if it’s just a joke/meme or if they’re really swearing off Hertz because of it.

Hertz settled a lawsuit in 2022 to cover 364 people falsely accused of stealing their rentals. These incidents didn’t all occur in the same year, but let’s assume they did for the sake of argument. Hertz claims that 364 number represents 95% of all such claims, but for the sake of argument, let’s assume they’re underreporting and it’s actually more like 50%. Altogether, let’s say 700 such incidents happen every year, which is a massive overestimate based on the numbers we have, but let’s roll with it.

Hertz has in the ballpark of 25 million rental transactions annually, so with the assumptions above, your chances of being wrongly arrested for stealing a Hertz rental are roughly 1 in 35,000. If you rented a Hertz vehicle every week for the next 20 years, your risk would still be only about 3%. And again, that’s based on the aggressive assumptions above. Your actual risk is probably much lower.

Wrongful arrests are awful, and I don’t mean to diminish the experiences of people who endure them. But if you’re passing up Hertz rentals when they’re the best/cheapest option for fear of becoming a highly unlikely victim, then you’re probably just costing yourself money.

Doesn’t matter. Not renting from Hertz as a matter of principle.
