[Expired] [Targeted] AmEx Offer: Google Pay, Use Three Times & Get $10 Credit

Deal has ended, view more Google Pay deals by clicking here.

Update 8/19/24: Offer is back, valid through 9/30. Hat tip to reader Davis

The Offer

No direct link, targeted offer

  • Get a one-time $15 statement credit by using your enrolled eligible Card to make five purchases using Google Pay

Our Verdict

There is another variation that requires using it three times for $10 statement credit. Basically a free $10/$15 if you have access to Google Pay.

I was trying to do this online because I’m overseas right now.. but it seems my 3x Google Pay at online checkout didn’t work to trigger the $10. Does that mean it needs to be done in person using the Google Pay app on a phone? Rereading the terms that seems to be the case.

Adding my DPs about which non in-person GPay purchases count: (inspired from seeing Dunkin DP below):

  • RetailMeNot in-app gift card was not recognized as GPay (qualified as “online retailer” for 3% on BCE)
  • Panera Bread in-app purchase of muffin was recognized as GPay (not qualified as “online retailer”; BCE only 1%)
  • “Google Services” (i.e. unlocking Google Voice phone number for $3) online was not recognized as GPay (counted as “online” for 3% on BCE)
  • I just tried a Panera Bread in-app purchase of eGift Card using GPay to pay. Will report back.

Using Google Wallet at the pump as tap to pay for Sheetz gas worked as usual (consistent with Google Pay and Apple Pay AmEx Offers triggered in the past).

Update to say that the Panera Bread in-app purchase of eGift Card using GPay to pay was not regornized as GPay (as opposed to Panera Bread in-app purchase of food using GPay).

What about for someone who’s overseas right now.. is there an app where I can use Google Pay for this deal? I thought I could just use Google Play store and buy 3 small aps with Google Pay / Wallet whatever it’s called.. but apparently that’s not one of the payment options

Used Google Wallet at three different merchants (Coffee Shop, McDonalds, Speedway) on 8/22. Received the $10 credit on 8/23. It was posted as a $10 credit for Speedway which was the third time I used Google Wallet so that must have triggered the credit?

I bought 3 bananas with 3x GPay/Wallet txns at the grocery store on 8/21. Offer isn’t pending yet though. Usually Amex emails me same-day when I redeem an offer successfully. I’ll reach out to CS next week if $10 offer still hasn’t been credited by then.

So will paying with the Google Wallet app work since there is no Google Pay anymore?

Google Wallet on Android worked for me.

Can I get targeted if I use the Amex app on my iPhone? I’m wondering if I should install and use the Amex app on my Android phones as well.

Literally not even called google pay anymore. Why are they marketing it as so?

I was wondering the same thing.

So Amex can deny all redemptions without even needing the fine print – “Google Pay doesn’t even exist anymore, how could you possibly have redeemed this offer?”

Amex people just aren’t very smart or they would quit

Google branding is terrible. The in-store payments are still “Google Pay” or “GPay.” The Android phone app has just been rebranded as Google Wallet. Also, the iOS app of the same name that just allowed for P2P payments has been delisted in the US app store.

Discover has a similar offer but it requires 3 x 20+ transactions to get $20 rewards.
