American Express Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card Now Contains ‘Lifetime Language’

American Express has added their ‘lifetime language’ limitation on the signup bonus to the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card. The terms now state:

You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card or previous versions of these Cards. You also may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors. If you are not eligible for a welcome offer, we will notify you prior to processing your application so you have the option to withdraw your application.

As of now, the Bonvoy Brilliant card does not have any such language. And so, you can apply for the Bevy card and subsequently the Brilliant card, but if you apply for the Brilliant card and then try applying for the Bevy card “you may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer.” (FM notes that the wording ‘may not’ is different from prior family lifetime exclusions which have conclusive language exclusions.)

We’ve lately seen Amex adding similar family language to the Blue Cash cardthe Gold card, Everyday, and Delta card. They’ve also recently combined the various versions of the Platinum card into one family as well.

What’s the difference? They’ll unexpectedly give you the bonus if they feel like it, and they’ll unexpectedly give you the popup if they feel like it.

Why would anyone apply for that card, let alone a second time? 😉

I don’t like Bevy, but someone who already earns 35 nights can choose from multiple cards to get the extra 15 nights needed for platinum and pay $0, $95, $125, $250 annual fee. The main difference is which FNA the cardholder prefers if any. The Bevy person is someone who likes 50k FNA (and also wants the extra point earning for paid stays). I burned my last 2 50ks (extended from Brilliant) at $390 value each, so those can make up for the fee. Again I don’t like Bevy.

Bevy’s FNA is after spending $15,000 though. So maybe someone is desperate enough for the SUB to get the Bevy ONCE, but definitely not worth keeping beyond the first year.

Yes I know. That’s the same reason I don’t like the card.

However I also said this person would be someone who already stays 35 nights. Spending for those nights earns a lot with this card and gets you probably 1/2 -2/3 of the way to $15k.

Oh no, Amex, you give me another reason not to engage with Marriott? This is the least painful deval ever. GFY Marriott.
