The Offer
Befrugal shopping portal is offering the following deal:
- Make any Cash Back eligible purchase of $25 or more between Mar 4, 2024 and Mar 8, 2024 and get a $4 bonus. Requires activation.
Our Verdict
Seems to be available forEasy bonus if you have $25 of shopping to do.
Hat tip to reader Eric
My purchase on 3/8 tracked as 3/9 and didn’t get bonus. not worth the hassle to argue with them
While I’ve had no problems with BeFrugal tracking, none of my purchases going back to November have moved from verified to payable and these were all with Walmart, a “preferred retailer”. TopCashBack and Rakuten have both paid me twice in the same timeframe. Is it typical for this site to be slower to pay out?
Cashback finally became payable on my account once each transaction become 4 months old.
The virtual Visa reward card from BeFrugal does NOT work for paying off a Citi credit card.
Chuck The terms may require that the purchase be made via the extension: “To earn bonus, BeFrugal member must activate Cash Back via a prompt from the BeFrugal extension on the computer before completing their purchase. Examples of this would include clicking a store on the extension popup, or clicking the BeFrugal prompt to ‘Activate Cash Back’ or ‘Apply Coupons’ while shopping or checking out on a retailer’s site.”
Not sure whether this was just a copy and paste error, but FYI.
Chuck Update: BeFrugal has revised the terms to delete the (apparently erroneous) reference to the extension.
I wasn’t too worried anyway. This line seemed to indicate that activating the normal way was would be fine: “clicking the BeFrugal prompt to ‘Activate Cash Back’”.
Did you make your purchase yet?
Eric 🔗 Yes, bought some gift cards from CardCash.
Did the $4 bonus post immediately? I haven’t done a BF promo in a while so I forgot if it’s like TCB or not.
Eric 🔗 No, hasn’t posted after a few hours. I am not expecting it to. I’ve had very poor experiences with BeFrugal recently — many untracked orders and several clawbacks that had tracked and were then zeroed out. I am willing to roll the dice on grocery gift cards for stores I would spend money at anyway, but I am not sure I would use them for anything else going forward.
To be clear, are you saying that the actual purchase hasn’t tracked yet or the $4 offer hasn’t? Which grocery store gc are you able to purchase from the site?
Eric 🔗 Now everything has tracked (both the $4 bonus and the underlying purchase).
I bought a bunch of Trader Joe’s cards from CardCash. P2 and P3 love Trader Joe’s, so this is money I would have had to spend anyway.
That’s not surprising as I’ve had a good experience with things tracking on BF generally.
I’ve actually had a really good success rate using TCB also so I don’t understand why so many people hate them so much. Do you?
Eric 🔗 My experience with TCB has been quite positive, but then again, I usually buy small stuff through them. Now, however, I have $75 in cash back pending through TCB after buying new cell service, so we’ll have to see what happens.
My main issue with BeFrugal has not been tracking (except when using the extension) — it’s been verified transactions getting reversed, supposedly by the merchant. This has happened a number of times now, across two accounts, and with completely different merchants, so I am suspicious that something is not on the up and up. But because BF is a very small company, there is nobody to talk to except Todd. If he says that the merchant zeroed out the purchase, there is nobody to appeal to.
That’s one of the advantages of big portals like Rakuten. Because it’s a large company, when CS recently took a ridiculous position with me on $48 in cash back, I e-mailed the company’s general counsel, and had my money three days later.
I had no idea that BF was small and Rakuten is big so that’s interesting. Is TCB small too?
BTW, I just logged into BF and my purchase and $4 bonus from last night already tracked. I started to write to you that my only pet peeve about BF is that they don’t send out tracking emails like TCB and Rakuten do.
However, before posting this comment I checked and saw that there is an “Email Preferences” section on their site and that option was turned off. Isn’t it unreal that I’ve had an account with BF for several years and I never looked for this until now?
Eric 🔗 TCB is medium-sized, and based in the UK. Rakuten is part of a huge Japanese conglomerate.
Everyone on DoC is already frugal. Many of us get Instacart gift cards when they’re on sale
Tried a $25 pack & go from Gift Card Mall. We’ll see if it tracks
(can be converted to airbnb, southwest, chevron, grubhub)
