Here is the new list of the Pay Yourself Back categories on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, valid through January 31, 2025:
- Utilities 1.25 cents per point
- Insurance 1.25 cents per point
- Fitness Clubs and Gym Memberships 1.25 cents per point
- Also available, as before: Gas Stations 1.25 cents per point
- Also available, as before: Annual Fee 1.25 cents per point
- (They’ve removed Wholesale Clubs and Pet Stores as options)
- (I’m not seeing anything above 1% on the INK cards, other than the select charities with 25% bump.)
A lot of people won’t be happy given the removal of Wholesale Clubs. On the other hand, I think utilities and insurance are actually easy categories to use and find these more easily useful.
- Chase Aeroplan PYB is 1.25 cents per point on Travel purchases and annual fee through 12/31/25.
- The Chase Southwest PYB 1 cent per point toward cover the annual fee (nothing else is eligible any longer, just the annual fee).
- The Chase United PYB for the Annual Fee (between 1.5 and 1.75 cents per point, depending on the card version). No expiration date for this one.
They are allowing me to redeem points eith the bonus on purchases from months earlier even before the new categories went into affect!
Yes, they allow PYB on purchases from 3 months ago. That has been a feature since the Covid-19 days, if not before.
Is Medicare premiums considered insurance?
yes from past Amex deal.
What is the actual discount you receive by redeeming at 1.25 points vs 1.0 points. For example is it better to use the bank of america 2.625% credit card or the sapphire reserve and redeem?
Basically 20% ($100 charge for 8000 URs). You can factor in how you got the points as well since a lot can be had with 5% categories. Worth it if you have a bunch of UR points that you won’t be using for travel. IMHO of course.
I now have travel listed as valid through 12-31-2025 in my Aeroplan card.

I don’t mind that they change the categories. The older categories were great too. I will be able to easily cash out $2k between insurance, gas, and utilities between now and February. Probably more than that. Grateful these are quite usable categories.
I’m torn. I’m intrigued that I could take the sting out of high insurance costs by paying for it with my stash of UR. But I’ve been paying for insurance while meeting MSR on inks…
I thought of that too. Just make another estimated tax payment.
Nice tip, was able to use all my points towards the bonus categories
It’s nice to see them keep on renewing Gas. Insurance is a nice addition.
In August I redeemed 6250 United miles to cover the $95 annual fee for my United Mileageplus Visa card. That comes to 1.52 cents per mile.
20% discount on Costco runs was pretty epic – sad to see it go. Thankfully, I should be able to use my remaining points on a few upcoming utility and insurance bills.
1.25% cashout is like getting a 20% discount on the spend. So, a $20,000 insurance bill would save $4,000. WOW!
That is not accurate. It is like getting 1.25% of $20k, or $250.
How are you getting 20% discount from that? Is it not just a .25X multiplier of whatever your base rate is?
It’s a 20% discount compared to cashing out your points at 1 cent per point.
If there was no discount, cashing out $20000 would cost 2,000,000 UR to pay off the 20K. With the 1.25% discount you would be using only 1,600,000 UR to pay it off. So yes it is 20% discount to what you would have to use if not for the discount. The saved 400000 UR is worth $4000. That, however does not take into consideration that you could have used that UR at a 50% discount for booking travel in which case this discount % is lowered a bit still better than banking that UR if you have no upcoming travel.
If your insurance bill is $20k I feel like you have bigger problems.
😂
Not sure about that – if you have medicare or marketplace family insurance for medical and/or a small business you could end up paying that amount of annual insurance across property, workers, malpractice, etc. Plus the full amount should be deductible expense as the CSR redemption is like a cash back statement credit that does not need reporting.
