Our Verdict
Previously Meijer used to offer a $10 instant discount on Visa or Mastercard gift cards; they’ve now shifted to giving the $10 back as points toward a future purchase. These points expire after a few weeks. Points can possibly be worth more when used for gas instead of groceries since you can get $1 off a gallon of gas up to 30 gallons which is a value of up to $30.
Meijer sells $200 Visa gift cards, and some locations sell $500 Visa gift cards, so this is a profitable deal especially when you use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.
Back to a clipped $10 off, this time $100 or more. Valid thru 12/21.

Last several times I tried Meijer’s machines no longer allow you to pay for a metaback gc with another metabank gc.
I wasn’t using meta, I double stacked using the Amex offer. I didn’t zero out each card either incase there was a .10 auth or anything but it worked via tap to pay.
I went to a standard cashier and asked to split. I awkwardly waited and she said go ahead. I was silly thinking they had to ask how much prior to paying. It wasn’t the case.
Meijer points expire 3 months after the end of the month earned. Some may want to defer triggering this offer until November to get an extra month (February) to use the points.
I had the same idea about delaying points expiration. Bought yesterday 11/2 but the points still expire 1/31/2025. No biggie – you still get 45 days to use a reward after claiming it, but it’s nice to have more time since Meijer will probably run some nice GC mperks promos this month.

We shop Meijer regularly, so the future purchase aspect using points is not a big deal for me. But my biggest gripe with the points/mperks system is that if you return anything where you used an mperks reward, you get a prorated refund back based on the reward amount, but you don’t get any points/rewards back with it. So you effectively lose the points. Doesn’t make sense either because those mperks rewards don’t have a minimum purchase required…the rewards should still fully apply to the remaining purchase IMO or at the very least give you points back.
If you tell the rep, they will normally manually refund you cash, but it’s annoying to have to remember that. Also seems ticky/tack if it’s a small amount and you complain that you’re missing 50 cents or something but the principle of it all is irritating. Sometimes I just ignore if it’s small like that that but it’s still irritating me in my head.
How often do you return something at Meijer? I’ve shopped there for 15 years and I don’t know that I’ve ever returned a single thing.
Not saying this isn’t a legitimate gripe, just wondering how often it actually would affect someone.
We shop there every week for about 80+% of our grocery shopping and random odds/ends. Returns not frequent but maybe a handful of things a year. Like the random jar that wasn’t sealed properly, clothing that didn’t fit quite right (young kids in the house), etc

Bad news for those with P2s that don’t like to juggle across multiple accounts.
I wondered when Meijer was going to make this change. An instant $10 off means they’ll always be giving $10 off, while 10,000 in points means some customers might forget and let their points (or a reward) expire, which results in a net gain for Meijer.
But on the other hand, 10,000 points can get you $1 off a gallon of gas up to 30 gal, so at least in my use case, 10,000 points = $30, which is a heck of a lot better deal than just $10 off.
I think it’s more to have the $10 stay in Meijer and try and force further spending. Regardless, I don’t mind it this way since I already shop at Meijer for groceries.
True, that $10 in rewards costs them less than a $10 discount, because when you spend that ten bucks you’re spending it on items that have a profit margin built in already, so it’s costing them less already, and then as you mentioned it gets you back in the store again.
It is more like for my area $24 in gas as they are usually a bit (ten to thirty cents) higher. T
Plus it takes coordinating three cars fill ups (two a around quarter tank the other a three quarters full or some other equivalent) to max it out. Though this can be from time to time good. Though sometimes due to expiring points it is more like $10 in the non-express (non-gas) main store location.
I’m conflicted on how I feel about this change.
Giving points instead of dollars now means I can redeem those 10,000 points for $1 off/gallon of gas at Meijer gas stations. And unlike Kroger fuel, Meijer gas is top-tier rated.
However (as far as I know) you cannot use these points to redeem $10 off to buy more gift cards, so that’s a huge bummer.
A side benefit for the points are it knocks the sales tax. Which in Illinois helps a bit.

Is that ongoing? Recall an mperks outage awhile some weeks ago.
Same. I can’t churn my cards anymore, nor use another household member’s account to net myself an additional discount.
Not to mention there might be less of these deals offered. (This is for Mastercard OR Visa, so in effect it’s for both. In the past, we’d get the deal for Mastercard GCs one week and then Visa GCs the next [or vice versa]).
I think I might wait until there’s a 5% cash back quarter with one of my credit cards to maximize this deal style, especially given the fee is pretty much $7.95 now. (RIP, GC churning.)
