Google Announces Subscription Model for Storage, Support, and Benefits called ‘Google One’

Google announced today the renaming of their paid Google Drive subscription to be called Google One. The seemingly benign name change will come with other benefits as well – it’ll be interesting to see how this evolves over time.

We all get 15 GB of free Google storage, beyond that you have to pay a monthly fee. They’ve now added a new tier and lowered the price for paid storage. And Google has added a Family Sharing option which allows you to share a single storage subscription with 5 other family members while each maintains completely separate Google accounts.

Here are the prices going forward:

  • 15 GB free storage in each Google account
  • $1.99 for 100 GB storage (same as before)
  • $2.99 for 200 GB storage (new plan)
  • $9.99 for 2 TB storage (this was previously $19.99)
  • $99.99 for 10 TB
  • $199.99 for 20 TB
  • $299.99 for 30 TB

On a broader scale, what’s interesting here is that they are now offering all Google One subscribers support for all Google consumer products. If you value this support, it’s pretty cheap to get it by signing up for the $1.99/month rate; you can even have 6 family members split the $1.99 fee.Google support may or may not have value to you, but they also note some other benefits:

People who use a lot of storage tend to use a lot of other Google products, too. So with Google One you get one-tap access to experts for help with our consumer products and services. Plus, you’ll gain access to extras from other Google products, like credits on Google Play or deals on select hotels found in Google Search. And we’ll be adding more benefits over time.

I don’t expect anyone will signup for the new Google One product currently unless they have storage needs, but it’ll be interesting to see how this evolves and if they add other useful benefits for subscribers, like an Amazon Prime kind of idea.

Techchrunch speculates that we might eventually see a single subscription fee for storage, YouTube Red, and Play Music; there could be many other such benefits as well. Of course we can expect the price to go up too if that happens.
