[Expired] [Business Cards] AmEx Offer: 10% Back At Staples, $100 Limit

This offer has now expired, view more American Express offers by clicking here.

The Offer

No direct link, targeted offer

  • Spend up to $1,000 in one or more transactions online or in-store at Staples and get 10% back in statement credits.

The Fine Print

  • Limit of $100 in total statement credits per American Express Card Member.
  • Expires November 30, 2018.
  • Excludes Quill, Smilemaker, Staples Business Advantage, Staples 4 Government, Staples Toner Services, Staples Technology Solutions, Staples Promotional Products, Staples Print Solutions, Copy and Printing Services, Staples Contract and Commercial, Staples App Center, Staples Industrial, Staples Book Rental, Staples Simplexity, Staples Share Fund, Coastwide Labs, Catalog and Staples Fundraising.
  • Not valid for gift cards in bulk purchases.

Our Verdict

Seems to only be showing on business cards and not personal cards. Staples frequently has Visa/Mastercard gift cards on sale and these aren’t considered bulk purchases so they should qualify without any issue. Staples also sells third party gift cards as well so that is also an option. Interesting to also see them launch this offer so early, usually we get a deal later in the year going into the busy shopping period. This should let more people max out the offer without any issue. I’d save this to your cards quickly, because it will get pulled soon due to reaching the enrollment limit.

Now they are sending out emails saying they are going to claw back all credits received in excess of $100 per card member. They are defining “card member” based on each person being one card member, even if they had multiple business cards and received the offer on each card. Unbelievable (DOC will have to do a new post about this). Anyone going to cancel their Amex cards before the clawback occurs? They might just do the clawback on a closed account anyway.

Email Subject: We’ve made an adjustment to your account

Hello [Name],

We’ve charged your account for $100.00 and we’d like to explain why.

You already received a credit of $100 for eligible purchases at Staples

We offered you 10% back as a statement credit each time you used your enrolled Business Card on eligible purchases at Staples by 11/30/18, for up to $100 in total statement credits per American Express® Card Member. However, we discovered that you received more than the $100 maximum credit across your Card(s).

To correct this error, we will debit your account for any amount credited to you above the $100 that you were eligible for. If you used multiple Card accounts, we may debit across each of your accounts to offset credits you received.

You will see this adjustment on an upcoming statement.

Thank you for your Card Membership.

william, i saved offer on several AU of same account. Still showing.
1. any risk w amex if using 1k x 6 cards over 3 months? (2k per month) – is limited max 100 total for one account with all AU?
2. thought AU 1 has offer and he used his card, seems he didnt, but AU 2 had it. call amex ok, or let it go? called and rep said max $100 for entire account, not per AU. However, each AU has it shown. try to ask to credit AU2 for use of AU1? Go to store, have AU2 buy and forgive fees paid for AU1? $6.95 per card.
Thank you

All my amex MR cards have this offer, and its added to each. So I ordered $1k worth of ebay gift cards from staples. I never got the “you used your amex offer” email, and the offer now no longer shows up at all under the account I used to order from, under Available, Added, or Savings.. I already got the (non-discounted) GCs and the charges posted.

All my other cards still have the staples 10% offer under Added.

EDIT – I tried the old amex interface link. I see the Staples 10% as Redeemed. Hopefully credit posts soon.

Strange thing – ordered online 3x$300 VGC and $50 uber egc. It seems Staples or Amex posts charges separately. Charge for Uber gc posted first and I got $5 credit. Charges for VGC (3×308.95) posted a week later, and no credit for these. I’m confused.

Just received a Staples 2x points on a card that already has 10% back up to $100 added. Will these stack or will the 2x points override the 10%?

I bought $3k in VGC in one shot at Staples – $1k on three different cards. $100 credit posted on each card a couple of days later.
