Just a friendly reminder that these new rules are now in place. We will remind you of these rules in the future when discussing these cards.
Last month we lead with a story that it was rumored American Express would be limiting who was able to get the sign up bonus on the SPG Luxury card, what was unusual was that they would be looking at what Chase Marriott cards applicants had recently had. This has now been confirmed and it will affect all Chase Marriott & American Express SPG cards. Readers have asked for more details, so here we go:
- These new rules will go into place on August 26th, 2018
- Chase & American Express won’t talk directly, they will be going through Marriott to check for eligiblity

Rules
Please note when we refer to the Marriott Premier Business card, this includes the Premier Plus business card (Premier Business cards will become Premier Plus).
Chase Cards
I assume the Chase 5/24 rules will still apply and that you’ll also be restricted to receiving the bonus once per 24 month period.

Our Verdict
Obviously bad news for churners. Marriott personal cards were already out for most readers due to the 5/24 rule, and most readers would have also already received the sign up bonus on the SPG cards previously as well. Main downside is the restrictions on the Luxury card and Marriott business card.
Hat tip to VFTW for the card specific rules
William Charles Hi Doc, I just received the upgrade bonus from old SPG to Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant. and I am currently holding Ritz card. Wondering that can I still get the bonus?
Not sure how it works with upgrade bonuses, I’d recommend reading the terms of your specific offer closely.
Yes, I’d second Matt’s request. It would be great to have the names in this post changed, and to have the rules updated or verified. I’m looking at a Marriott card as my next application.
This is the current text at Marriott cards:
“Welcome offer not available to applicants who (i) have or have had the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy BusinessTM Credit Card from Chase, or the Marriott Rewards® Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 30 days, (ii) have acquired the Marriott Bonvoy BoundlessTM Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy BoldTM Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier Credit Card from Chase or the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days, or (iii) received a new Card Member bonus offer in the last 24 months on the Marriott Bonvoy BoundlessTM Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy BoldTM Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase or the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase.”
Will, you wrote in the original article that when applying for a new card the the 24months restriction not only applies to having received a signup bonus for new card but also an upgrade.
Do you have data points for that? I’m not sure if you can interpret ” received a new Card Member bonus” for upgrade offer. It is a “new” card but not sure.
Hello Doctor of Credit, would it be possible to update this post to reflect the new card names (and also list the newer cards, like Chase Marriott Bold)? Thanks!
I’d like to sign up for the SPG Luxury card. I got the old Marriott Rewards Premier Business card in April 2018. My most recent statement from the card (September) now calls it the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Business card. Does anyone know if Chase treat this the same as the Marriott Rewards Premier Business card for the purpose of excluding the signup bonus? Or is this a different card and I’m still eligible? Thanks in advance.
Would there be any reason to get the personal card vs the business card? Except the $5 difference in annual fee? On the Marriott chase cards
Do these restrictions apply to the SPG Personal -> Lux Upgrade offers also? Or just to new applications?
I believe the upgrade offers do not contain the restrictive language.
Read the T&Cs of your upgrade offer carefully, but historically MOST upgrade offers have no had such restrictions. But since each upgrade offer is targeted, it’s possible that SOME upgrade offers might have some restrictive language, so that’s why you need to read YOUR offer’s language rather than purely relying on what other people have seen.
They don’t have the restrictions for upgrade written and also don’t apply.
William Charles the paragrath for Marriott Rewards Premier Plus has a typo on 3rd rule. It says Chase when it should say Amex cards.
Thnx for the great summary as usual.
Thanks, fixed
It will be interesting to see if same day applications circumvent this rule. I.e. if I apply for Marriott personal, Marriott Biz, and SPG Luxury all on the same morning, will it show in real time and/or will to double back and potentially retract bonuses.
This would only be possible if you’re getting your first card for both categories.
There is a rather large error in this post on the SPG personal, the Marriott biz does NOT d/q you from getting the bonus. Info is available in the T&C on the Amex site.
Agreed – I do not see the Chase Marriott Biz Card on the list in the SPG Personal’s T&Cs. From the SPG Personal offer terms on AMEX’s website: “Effective 8/26, welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had The Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase, The Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, The Marriott Rewards Credit Card from Chase, or The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card from JP Morgan in the last 30 days”
