Changes Coming to Existing eBay/Paypal Mastercard Cardholders in 2019

The eBay/Paypal Mastercard card sent out an email to cardholders about “exciting changes are coming to your eBay Extras Mastercard® in 2019.” It seems they haven’t yet settled entirely what the changes will be: “But first, we’d like to hear what you think about your rewards program. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief survey.”

eBay recently launched a new eBay Mastercard which 3x (worth 2%) on eBay until you spend $1,000 in the year, then 5x on eBay purchases (worth 3.33%) thereafter. I took the survey and they mentioned that this 5x/3x structure – exactly how it is on the new card – is being considered to replace the existing structure which earns 3x on gas and restaurants, 2x on eBay and Paypal, and 1x everywhere else.

The new structure is a bit better for eBay purchases for high eBay spenders. Most others won’t find the card too interesting unless there are other benefits.

The survey included many other potential benefits for things like:

  • quarterly cardholder discounts on eBay
  • regular cardholder discounts on eBay
  • discounts on your most used eBay category
  • 5% discount on electronics costing $100+ purchased on eBay
  • free return shipping on eBay when using your card
  • discounts for eBay Valet users

My guess is they’ll be changing us all to the 5x/3x structure of the new card, maybe with another benefit or two. But apparently they’re still doing research so we’ll see how it goes.

The points aren’t worth 1 cent / 1$, so the gas and restaurants 3% isn’t driving me to use the card outside of Ebay. I am thankful I took the HP for the card because I buy from Ebay, and in some cases merchants won’t accept credit, but as default payment method, I can still use the Ebay MC via Paypal.

Is this also being considered for the PayPal Extras mastercard? Or is this only being considered for the eBay Extras mastercard?

I don’t have either, though the cards’ reward structures appear to be identical. The screenshots only refer to the eBay Extras version, but don’t mention the PayPal Extras version. Have any existing PayPal Extras cardholders received this same email?

ANYTHING connected to paypal is a waste of time and energy. Ebay has a new card (also issued by Snychrony) that has a small $50 signup bonus right now; maybe it will be better than the paypal version.

I hate complicated. JP Morgan Chase Freedom 5% and Citi Bank Dividend is straight 5%, no scam structure

How is 5% ROTATING categories less complicated than a fixed earning structure? The new card would only increase one category if you spend $1000 on eBay.

The problem with their card is the points value. If they change that I’ll be excited.
