Hawaiian Airlines Increasing Baggage Fees By $5 Per Bag

Hawaiian Airlines has announced that they will be increasing the fees checked for baggage effective November 13th, 2018. Fee increases are as follows:

  • First checked bag will cost $30 (previously $25)
  • Second checked bag will cost $40 (previously $35)

This is a flat increase of $5 per bag. Checked baggage for interisland Hawaiian flights will remain the same. In late August JetBlue announced they would be raising the fees for checked baggage, since then United, Air CanadaAmerican Airlines, Alaska Airlines & Delta have all increased their fees as well. Southwest is still fighting the good fight and offering two bags for free.

Citi Prestige: Earn a one‑time $30 statement credit after you make at least three Amazon.com purchases of $30 or more each with your Citi® card between 11/14/2018 and 12/31/2018.

I called last week to ask about retention bonuses. They mentioned this offer and then emailed the details this morning. I had to call twice. First, CSR was not game. The second CSR told me about this offer and the “exciting” new benefits of the card, but was nice about it.

Looks like this card is going by way of the dinosaurs…extinction. Time to cash out or transfer my remaining Thank You Points.

Hawaiian has been going downhill fairly hard the past few years. Was surprised to find that they charged for the inflight entertainment on the 11 hour JFK-HNL route where it was never the case before. They also made an announcement boasting they were the only airline to still serve a meals. However both my recent AA & DL flights to HI had both complimentary food and entertainment.

Wow, what a dumb move by Hawaiian considering Southwest is about to start flying there with no bag fees or change fees. Way to make themselves less attractive. Flew on Hawaiian once, wasn’t crazy about their service anyway. People keep talking about “spirit of aloha”. I had Hawaiian gate attendants bitch at me about how my carry-on “looked awfully big”. Naively I ordered “welcome lei” because it was our first trip to Hawaii. Not sure what I was expecting, but my wife and I were handed the leis but two surly middle-aged guys in business suites. Awesome spirit of aloha all the way around, a now with higher luggage fees…

By the way talking about Hilton, check out Hiltons new “All-Inclusive resort” in La Romana DR. (5th night free plus tax and resort fees included when redeeming points). Redeem your Hilton points at 1cpp or higher!

Good luck!

When they still only had 35k miles sign up bonus for their card 2 years ago, they kept saying “That’s good for one round trip flight between Hawaii and mainland.”

Now that they have an in-flight offer of 60,000 miles, they’re still saying it’s good for one roundtrip flight between Hawaii and mainland.
