Our Verdict
As travel continues to decline due to COVID-19 I think it’s safe to say this isn’t the last promotion like this we will see.
looks like this was extended to 5/31/2020
I wish airlines would extend everyone’s status by a year.
Is that fair or irrational to think?
It’s likely that will happen if the pandemic continues its current trajectory. For example, think about it from AS’s perspective. If travel grinds to a halt, there will be a ton of current AS elites that won’t requalify, promotion or not. For those elites, the obvious solution will be to status match to DL, UA, or AA for 2021. AS only loses if that happens.
That is also the brilliant thing about this EQM bonus; it will effectively cost AS nothing if they end up extending status towards the end of the year anyway!
Has anyone noticed better odds at complimentary upgrades because of less people flying during this coronavirus scare? So far, I’ve taken 9 domestic flights in the last month, one today, and the waitlist has still been about average. Got lucky a little more than half the time. Currently, DL PM and UA PP.
That’s if Alaska doesn’t go bankrupt… or the global depression from this virus doesn’t kill us all… FEAR!! (clutches pearls)
Get a grip, people.
It is ridiculous that they believe promotions like this will dispel people’s concern about the coronavirus and it is pathetic that a company does not want to help control the spread of the disease but encourage people to travel more. I just have my $700 tennis tickets refunded, 200K past cancellation ddl hilton points returned and $300 Delta tickets returned as future credit, but AS still sticks to its cancellation policy and won’t offer any alternative solution for a $74 ticket. I can’t blame AS, but I think it is more important to make sure people will still choose them when it’s safe to travel, than trying to sell several more tickets now.
I choose not to attend the tennis event, so it is fair for me to pay the price. But there are people whose conference/meeting has been cancelled so there is no reason for them to board the flight, or people who are susceptive to the virus and they really shoudn’t travel.
I couldn’t agree more. I tried to cancel/change my flight to Seattle next week for a legitimate reason (booked in November) and they wouldn’t budge on the fees. Even told me “the media is exaggerating the Coronavirus.” Hopefully some people on here can make use of this promotion regardless.
Coronavirus is not like a regional bank bonus. Look at how many people around the world have been infected or have died of it, why some people in the US still believe it will not spread out if large sports/music/election events keep going on. Please at least read the WHO report.
I couldn’t agree less. The media is responsible for exaggerating this beyond reason. And spreading unnecessary fear is going to kill the economy, especially travel sector, and maybe end this golden age of card bonuses and points.
The only thing that will actually kill the economy is when the the spread of coronavirus is not controlled. And you should know better economy doesn’t means better bonuses, it means devaluation of points and restrictions on bonuses.
Speak for yourself. I will increase my travel due to this promotion.
Same here, Jr. Lovin’ these deals.
Agreed, its kind of weird how limited their concessions are to their customer base with regard to this. Especially given that they are hubbed out of SeaTac, and the disruptions in the region are massive. BIggest employers requiring work from home? Universities shut down? School system holidays? They have a lot of legit Origin and Destination Seattle region traffic and that’s all very much limited by that stuff.
There’s a chance that AS herself will be cancelling flights and trying to push people on to alternative schedules….people might be able to use that to get refunds. AS moved one of our flights recently (times still worked for us) and I considered that, but in the end stuck with their new itin.
Better hurry. Alaska Airlines think COVID-19 will taper off by April 11.
More like, better WORRY! It will taper off, or we’ll all be dead.
