Hey guys. The headline for this piece implies that these are all 1-year subscriptions. Some of them come out weekly, however, so for example the 12-issue New Yorker offer ends up being a bit less than three months. A $5 offer for an entire year for TNY would be really sweet if it existed.

Does anyone see Consumer Reports? I used to check this magazine out from my library until finding that a bunch of pages are consistently torn out by patrons too inconvenienced to use a copier. I see it for $21.95 over at discount mags. My subscription is up for renewal. I also subscribe to Reader’s Digest. I remember when I was a kid they offered a life-time subscription for $100. My Dad told me it would be a good deal for me, but of course I wasn’t interested!

Thanks DOC. I subscribed to 2 mags. A refreshing change from screen life.

Reminder too that magsformiles offers tons of redemptions for miles usually at a pretty good value. Prices change but they had a dozen or so major magazines for 100 skypesos. The WSJ was just 1800 for a year. If you do get a magazine they’ll periodically email you. Click through that link for more discounted offerings than what normally shows

I wanna know who is still subscribing to physical magazines in 2019 except for businesses with waiting rooms.

Before Verizon switched their rewards program I used to get their daily deal magazines with their generally worthless points. At one point we were up to around a dozen. We are still getting some of them 2-3 years later, I think since we signed up for some multiple times they consolidated accounts or they reduced the number of annual issues so our 12 or 24 issue subscription turned into multiple years.

I did/do flip through some of them especially on family trips and outings but I wouldn’t pay $5 for any of them. Family Handyman used to be a good read and something I could give to my FIL afterwards – I might give it another go.

My HH still gets a couple. I don’t pay full price, though. At normal subscription price, it would be a hard no. At $1 a month or less, preferably much less, it’s a luxury I am willing explore.

Idk I like getting the economist in paper. It’s easier to read as a paper document, and I’m not distracted by other apps and things. I’m also more likely to read every article.

multiple studies show that people retain more when reading physical objects. Engages multiple senses (touch and smell) and in some theories activates the circuitry for location (like “it’s in the top corner in the right”)

So if you want to learn, it’s better.

You can get many of these magazines for free from https://www.rewardsurvey.com/ – just fill out some forms with made up info.

I have been doing Reward Survey… with mostly real info, for at least a few years now. But, now almost all magazines they offer are digital, so that is pretty worthless to me. I was hoping they were going to offer up some other kind of reward as I have a huge reward balance, but I have a feeling it will just shutdown someday and won’t dispense anything for our unused virtual rewards. I don’t see a reason why they couldn’t offer some other subscription service besides mags… there has to be something else that could be mutually beneficial.

Looks like the good ole’ days of reward survey being just a couple questions is over. Today, when I logged in it, it has you go over all your personal and household info, and then starts you into an endless question pit, and tells you they have reached the reward limit AFTER they collect all your info. Unless this is temporary, RIP. FYI sloebrake

The selection of mags was almost down to nothing as of late, but I am wondering if I can still gain access to the $700+ in rewards I had earned. I will give it a few days, after the flood of complaints they are going to get, to see what’s up.

You can get magazines for free through your library membership with Libby app

My library uses the RBDigital app for magazines instead of Libby but ultimately the same effect. Our medium-sized library in Ohio has over 300 titles and unlimited checkouts each month.

Definitely worth it to check out your local library’s website to see all the digital things they have on offer – I was surprised how much mine provides!

Libraries aren’t free. I get my bill every November.

Obviously this depends where you live. Taxes, paid by the locality, pay for most public libraries…. anywhere I have lived.

But, digital magazines aren’t necessarily included. Where I live now, I think they have some magazines, in Zinio, I believe. And AFAIK there is a limit, just like for movies, for how many you can get.

That’s what I was saying. Property tax bill comes in November.

Ok, and if you aren’t a property owner, but you live in your town, e.g., in an apartment, it’s free.

But, we will go with your story… The library use, or lack of use, costs you no extra, but not free.

Well, technically you’re paying your landlord’s property taxes. It’s turtles all the way down.

Some things are better in hard copy. For example, coming from a tablet is terrible.
