Our Verdict

Should be able to save at least another $50 by stacking other Amazon deals if you haven’t use all of them already. Keep in mind this is the older model

For some reason, this is showing $699 now. Anyone still seeing $679?

Also, how do you calculate “at least” $50 in stacked Amazon deals. The most I was able to come up with was $45 which assumes I haven’t used them yet.

MacBook Air before the “refresh” has a fantastic keyboard, is lightweight, and looks sleek and the logo lights up (if you care about that sort of thing). I’ve been using one from 2014 to this day, though the battery stopped holding a charge a long time ago, and now I use it while plugged in and with an external monitor. Screen sucks, especially by today’s standards. Trade offs, lots of them. For $680, I’d pass to get a better screen

This is not the latest model with Retina Display (Model:MVFK2LL/A) that’s available on BB for $899. This is last year’s old model……..so be sure before buying it.

Bingo old model with no retina display.. Big difference. Good labtop for someone in college or something, but not one I would personally have as resolution and color are subpar.

How does this compare to the I7 version being offered by Costco on Black Friday for $20 more? Seems like the $20 is worth it for the I7 plus the two year Costco warranty.

Yes- it says it came out Nov 2018. Wondering if it’s a good deal- I don’t need the latest computer. Will there be a better price anywhere?

It’s a good computer at a good price. The most recent version is, of course, better than this older version in every single area. But is it $221 better (the price difference between the old version and the new version on Amazon right now)? That depends on you.

Like you, I also don’t usually (caveat below) need the absolute latest features or the absolute best hardware specs. So I would likely purchase the older one at that price if not for my reason below:

I’m in the market for a new computer (my current Acer PC is having various hardware issues), but at the moment neither MacBook Air interests me because I’m waiting for a Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) model. Wi-Fi 6 is still super early days (I don’t even have a Wi-Fi 6 router yet), but I don’t buy a new computer very often. If I buy a computer now, I’ll probably have the same computer for at least four years.

I know a Wi-FI 6 MacBook model will (almost certainly) be released sometime in 2020. So I’ll wait for that (assuming my awful Acer PC doesn’t completely fall apart before then).

This is actually the Mid 2017 model; there is no 2018 ‘old’ MacBook Air. Personally, I think that this is just an ok price for the model. I had the 2013 model (which is nearly identical) and I disliked the screen. It’s an old TN panel which has very poor viewing angles and a low resolution. Even budget laptops have better screens these days. That and other improvements alone make the $2-300 premium to the new ones worth it.
