Our Verdict
The trade in values kind of suck, it seems they are offering $5-$25, with $25 being offered for Kindle paperwhites. I have been wanting to upgrade to the Oasis from my paperwhite since it was released, although after reading some additional reviews for this post I think I have cooled on that idea a bit. Either way it’s currently full price, under this promotion I’d get $25 off for my paperwhite and 25% off as well ($62.5) that basically values my paperwhite at $87.50. All things considered that’s pretty good and I could probably do better by just buying an unused Kindle for cheap and then offloading my paperwhite but that seems like a lot of work.
This deal will get a lot more interesting if/when Amazon also has a sale on Kindle’s, bringing the price down. It looks like the 25% discount should apply to any price they are currently charging. I’d love to hear from any readers that have an Oasis, is it worth the upgrade or am I just chasing the newest thing?
Hat tip to reader Hunter
They rejected my older Kindle Fire. Nothing wrong with it either. Their loss because I’m just going to keep using the old one and not buy a new one unless they have a good sale. I just thought a newer one would be nice to have on an upcoming vacation and a couple of business trips.
Hey Doc
I just did as you suggested in the post which involved some work though.
found a working kindle on ebay for 35 bucks and sent for trade in , got 25 agc plus 25% off on oasis.
offloaded my old papewhite for 65 bucks.
got a new oasis yesterday , thanks for the idea.
Go for the Oasis. The additional inch on the screen makes a big difference and water performance has been fine for me. As much free travel as we all get thanks to your hard work on this blog, I decided to make my travel with this thing. And anything encouraging more reading is good in my (e) book.
Do you have any issues at all with the water proofing? Ideally I’d like to use it in a pool with wet fingers
You can temporarily disable the touch screen on the new Oasis, so you can use it with wet fingers or if it’s gonna get a little wet without issue as long as you’re just using the physical page back/forward buttons (so, no highlighting or looking stuff up). I really love my new Oasis. I had the old one and don’t think I would’ve upgraded (the upgrade from the Voyage to the old Oasis, however, was well worth it), but it was stolen when I was out and I was too spoiled by my old Oasis to go back to the Voyage. I love the form factor of the Oasis, not only how it fits in your hand, but how the screen is laid out differently. Since I got it I read so much more since it’s a no-brainer to keep in my bag, so I think the cost makes up for itself over time.
Oh that’s completely fine. I don’t care about the touch screen anyway, physical buttons work fine. Think I might treat myself.
Welcome to the club! Looking forward to hearing what you think
The next paperwhite update is rumored to have a “comfort light” feature like what’s already on the kobo. If you do most of your reading at night I would just wait for that. I don’t really like white lights but warm lighting might finally get me to switch from my kindle keyboard.
Yeah I’m more interested in the oasis so I can use it without worrying about it getting wet.
They offer $50 for my Voyage, and $75 for a first-gen Oasis. That does suck more than a little. I’ve been wanting the Oasis 2, lately, and I’m saving up my Amazon Prime CC points for it. I’ll probably have enough in June if I also trade the Voyage in + get the 25%. I’ve offloaded so many Kindles over the years that I have no-one to give this one to !
It’s actually not such a bad deal for the trade in. Before I saw it I was thinking of selling my Voyage on eBay and picking up a new Oasis. Sale prices for the Voyage are around $100. Considering eBay takes a 10% cut and Paypal another 3%, you’re looking at ~$87 if you charge for shipping, ~$80 if not. I traded in my Voyage to Amazon and got $50, plus 25% or $87.50 off a new Oasis with 32GB and 4G (I push articles to my Kindle to read to/from work and during my lunch break and don’t have WiFi at work). That works out to $137.50. $50 more at the low end on what I would’ve made if I sold on eBay and a lot less of a hassle of dealing with buyers, waiting for payment, etc.
I want to trade in my kindle fire. It’s slower than windows xp with 92 mb of ram. They should do kindle fire trade in.
Nah, you’re just reading too fast! 😄
