Amazon Prime Video Will Introduce Ads in 2024 ($2.99/month to bypass)

Amazon announced that beginning in early 2024, they will introduce ads to their Prime Video offering. Or Prime members can pay an additional $2.99 per month to watch ad-free. (That’s on top of their regular Prime cost.)

To continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time, starting in early 2024, Prime Video shows and movies will include limited advertisements. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. Ads in Prime Video content will be introduced in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Canada in early 2024, followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia later in the year. No action is required for Prime members. We’re not making changes in 2024 to the current price of Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* for U.S. Prime members and will share pricing for other countries at a later date. We will email Prime members several weeks before ads are introduced into Prime Video with information on how to sign up for the ad-free option if they would like.

This is annoying and will make Prime membership less valuable for some.

Amazon just sent out an email reminding users about the change. No new info in the email

It is all going to trend towards ad and ad free before they come for sharing passwords.

The businesses need to show revenue for the stock market and there are writers and cast and crew to pay for.

I’d have empathy but its the same studios paying disgusting sums to gain IP and its the same celebrities who make millions for a movie.

Annoying…. 5% back on the amazon card at whole foods and 10% off sale items there for prime members basically pays for the membership, so I’ll keep it for now.

Haha. I have never been a paying member. I don’t mind waiting 2-5 days for the standard free shipping. Do people really need a bag of almonds or a new muffin pan delivered in 24 hours? Just plan ahead, FFS.

I do a free trial every year. That’s all I need. Gives me an excuse to cycle through rarely used credit cards to give them all 2-3 charges in that month; all with $2-$10 of items on each order. Amazon has plenty of money. They don’t need me as a member.

I started flying the jolly rodger again last year. Too much crap to deal with in streaming services.

It’s not the fact they’ll have ads that kills me, it’s the fact they will likely gut the ability to download – rip downloading movies for watching on the plane, train, cruise, or long periods without (free) internet.

What makes you think they’ll do that?

They’ll reserve that ability for only the upper tier paying the $3 – that’s what they (streaming services) usually do.
