Amazon To Stop Allowing Venmo Payments

Original Post 11/8/21:

Amazon and Venmo have teamed up to allow using Venmo as a payment option on Amazon.com and the Amazon mobile app. The option will be included at some point during 2022.

Press Release

Sounds like it’ll only be possible to pay with your bank account or Venmo balance, not credit cards saved in Venmo. (TechCrunch speculates that there might be a crypto checkout angle in the works for some future time given Paypal/Venmo’s increase in crypto offerings and support.)

I’m shocked that Amazon would allow Venmo in for payments since they’ve always seemed to promote a fully ‘Amazonian’ world. This seems like a feather in the cap of Venmo. Maybe I’m underestimating Venmo’s dominance among some age groups.

I was surprised they even allowed Venmo. If I were a global distribution monopoly, with even more profitable side hustles and huge government contracts like Amazon…I wouldn’t allow third party payment processors either. I’m surprised they haven’t pushed to get rid of accepting visa/amex/mc/discover in favor of their own network…maybe that’s in the pipeworks too.

When you have that much dominance there’s no point in letting 3rd parties, like Paypal take a slice of your transactions. We might think they would have too, but the reality is based on my observance of the past few decades is that their is no real consumer activism in the USA that actually makes a difference to any companies bottom line.

they do have a payment network. it is called amazon pay. the fact you do not know it exist is the very testament why they even allowed Venmo on the platform. Because no one uses amazon pay to be honest.

Amazon pay isn’t a network.. you still need a credit card

Not a loss. I pay with my Chase Amazon probably 98% of the time. I use PP for discounts and to avoid Utility payment fees on a credit card, but my Venmo has pretty much been abandoned.

It was spend $50 on Amazon and get $5 from Venmo, each month from Sept to Dec. So basically $20, nothing major.

That’s right, $5 for $50/month until December. So I got $20 from Venmo by reloading $50 Amazon GC each month.

Amazon may have been testing Venmo (Paypal owned) for intergration. Wouldn’t be surprised if PayPal decides to sell it off to Amazon. Time will tell.

Venmo is a cash cow for pp. I highly doubt they will ever sell it.
