In March American Airlines announced that miles wouldn’t expire until July 1st, 2020 due to COVID-19. Normally miles will expire after 18 months of no activity. Today American Airlines has announced that the 18 month activity requirement will not apply to members under the age of 21. For members who turned 21 years of age before July 1st the 18 month period will be applied on a pro rata basis.

What is so hard about an erewards redemption for 500 AA miles once in a while?
Let. Them. Fail.
Title made me think AA miles expire in 21 years.
Does anyone know if the miles redeposit due to award ticket cancellation, resets the expiry date ?
Now that United miles don’t expire, I think it’s only a matter of time before AA joins the rest with a no expiration policy. No doubt they’ll unveil it as some revolutionary new feature.
In the meantime, I’ve found keeping $12 in a Bask account an easy way to have a mile automatically deposited into my AA account each month.
Flying only twice a year, having miles that don’t expire is one factor in which airline’s ticket I choose to buy.
It’s easy to do a yearly reset with a small shopping portal purchase, but it bothers me that I have to do that, because it’s rewarding the airline for having a restrictive, customer-unfriendly policy.
At least the domestic expirations can be reset with activity, unlike some international programs that can’t be reset.
I’m sure if their mileage program members find a way to prevent them from expiring without flying on a revenue ticket in the next few months, AA will just find a way to suspend your account anyway. They should just fly for bankruptcy and get absorbed by a better airline.
Be careful what you wish for! Less competition will mean higher prices on some routes.
less competition is never better
Just go bankrupt already. US airlines are some of the worst I’ve seen in the world but American has to be the worst of them all.
This fall’s gonna be nuts for airlines… that Cares Act/special appropriation money runs dry… expect bankruptcies, furloughing, and mergers, maybe all at once!
