American Airlines Now Allowing Awards To Be Cancelled Online [Extended]

Update 6/25/20: According to TPG this has been extended. I no longer see any end date listed?

Original post 5/26/20: American Airlines is now allowing loyalty members to cancel award flights online and get the miles redeposited within 48 hours of cancelling online (previously you could cancel online but you wouldn’t get any sort of refund). This is valid on tickets purchased by May 31st, 2020 for travel through September 30th, 2020 (free cancellation period). Unfortunately for this to be possible the reservation must be for a single passenger (and this traveler must be the same as the AA member who booked the flights) for flights on American Airlines and the ticket must have been booked directly with American Airlines.

The details are on this page: https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-program/miles/redeem/award-travel/award-travel.jsp#manageyourawardtravel

The cut-off is awards booked on/before June 30th. They also have a section on awards booked after July1st – more restrictions if you want the miles redeposited.

For those of you got an refund, How long does it take to refund the tax? I cancelled four award tickets online, called AA rep miles were reinstated in less an hour. That was 7 days ago but yet to see taxes refunded back to my credit cards.

I didn’t get refunded for one of the two itineraries I cancelled, so I’ll call back in. The itinerary for which I got refunded took 3-5 days for refund processing on a Citi AAdvantage card.

I no-showed my mid-March flight to NYC and really was not expecting a refund. DM’ed AA’s twitter account anyways a couple days ago and they refund my award ticket.

AA is being surprisingly generous. Maybe they want good PR after taking in taxpayers’ dollars

FWIW I had six award tickets from a planned trip at the start of April that I cancelled online a few days before the trip was scheduled. I finally called AA yesterday to ask for the miles to be redeposited to my account. The voice system gave me the option of receiving a call back in about an hour rather than waiting on hold, which I took. They called me back in roughly the expected time, asked for the record locator number (rather than all of the individual ticket numbers), and refunded the miles in less than a minute. As long as you have the time to wait for the call back it was a fairly painless process. I confirmed this morning that the miles were actually redeposited.

I have yet to have my award ticket miles redeposited to my account for USA-Canada flight, though they did refund taxes paid. Odd.

Don’t know what else to do as phone reps keep saying it will be deposited though flights were almost a month ago.

FYI you can still call in and get award tickets refunded. Just cx’ed 4 tickets for a wedding in July. Tickets were purchased in early March right before everything shut down. Points are supposed to post in a few days.
