Our Verdict
I got excited for this promotion until I saw that there was a $75 minimum spend requirement per shop. If you spend exactly $75 this is an extra 6.67 miles per $1 spent, not bad but not the greatest either. I’d recommend using something like cashbackmonitor to make sure you’re getting a good deal, as other portals might offer a better deal on some merchants even with this bonus.
AA shopping portal has been absolutely awful in the last year. Have used to buy appliances on build.com via this portal…… last year it took about 10 weeks and about a dozen emails for the miles to post. This year…13 000 miles simply did not post and gave up chasing them. Had confirmation and even have the aa chrome toolbar confirm. Using various coupons directly on site would have saved me hundreds of dollars instead.
How long does it take for AA to track the purchase? Bought a $500 VGC from GCcom last night and still not pending this morning.
A few weeks is typical for me.
Even the base 1m/$?
Looked back into my last order in more detail and I found:
Got an email from AAdvantage eShopping that my order tracked on the same day that I made the order.
Got an email at order date + 3 weeks that I “earned” the base 1m/$ from the purchase, I guess this is when the miles posted.
Got a second email at order + 3 weeks that my bonus miles from the overall spend promo were pending.
I placed another $500 order today, a couple hours ago, and I already received an email that my order has tracked. However I still don’t see this most recent order anywhere on their web dashboard.
Thanks for the info. It looks like my purchase didn’t track since I haven’t received an email for my order from last night. I wonder if it’s taking longer because I’m a first time shopper at GCcom.
In 3mon, I’ve earned 8,491mi through the AA portal. Very easy way to get extra rewards (on top of credit card rewards) for stuff you need ANYWAY. At 1.2 cents per mile, that’s over $400/yr. So I’ll stock up on dog food and whatnot from Walmart.com, and get an extra 2,000mi. Perfect. Portals are a great way to keep miles from expiring as well.
Sounds like a nice way to offset the fee on some Giftcards.com cards
Yeah I just did four purchases over $75 at gc.com in 3 minutes. Terms “technically” exclude gift cards …. but never been a problem before.
Never been a problem before with AAdvantage Shopping specifically or never been a problem in general?
If there are no problems with AAdvantage Shopping and GC.com, I might do this myself. I need just a few more AAdvantage points.
I bought GC.com $500 VGCs through AA portal during the back to school promo and they credited me full points and bonus points. They also had the same anti-gift card language then as well, it’s not enforced, it’s just general boilerplate given that most websites don’t give portal bonuses for gift cards (gift card merchants excluded, obviously).
Thanks for the info, Tim. 🙂
I think I’ll wait for some miles from the last two promotions to post before I partake of yet another.
