American Express Launches ‘AmEx Offers’ Exclusive To New Cardmembers

American Express recently launched some backend changes to ‘AmEx Offers’ allowing them more targeting options. We saw some of this with the 40th anniversary of the Platinum card but now some AmEx offers are targeted towards new cardmembers. The offer clearly displays it’s a new card offer (see below) and clearly show as early as five days after sign up for a new card. Currently there are offers for Walmart, ExxonMobil, Gap and SeatGeek but I suspect these will change over time.

Assuming these are actually special offers for new cards, doesn’t this even more strongly incentivize people to cancel old cards and sign up for new ones instead of maintaining cards long term? Unless they start adding “Old Card” or “Valued Customer” AmEx Offers, I think this would have the opposite effect of what they want.

News flash: Amex Marketing team randomly adds “Valued Customer” and “For you only” to the pre-existing offers.

I agree. My only thought as to why Amex is doing this is that perhaps they have data that shows new card members who redeem offers are more likely to refer their new card to others. So may be worth it for the new applications. Just a guess.

Maybe, but not if the screenshot is indicative of their best offers. Nothing special there.

> incentivize people to cancel old cards and sign up for new ones

That’s not a thing most people think about. Non-churners sign up for a card, maybe or maybe not for the spending bonus, and then use the card and keep it. I would assume that’s most of AmEx’s customers, and people in this comment section don’t represent the average cardholder.

Churners are gunna churn. This stuff is aimed at the average consumer.

Amex wants to ensure people get and USE their card as soon as possible. The more they do that, the higher likelihood they get added to Apple/Android wallet as default card, or get added to sites as default card, or get pulled out of the wallet as the default card…

It’s 100% about securing long term spend through habit formation (check amex for offers, use amex card, repeat).

Considering this one does not spend until the arbitration opt-out is acknowledged which is process American Express only offers by postal mail then will not be taking part of such offers.

I had my card # replaced due to some fraudulent charges and that Amex Card received good offers once I activated it. So the new # might trigger those deals too. But will need confirmation from someone else
