Update 9/30/21: This has now been approved by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
According to the public agenda for an upcoming Port Authority of New York and New Jersey board meeting American Express is in the process of finalizing a 15 year lease (with 5 year optional renewal) for an airport lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The lounge would be located on the third floor in the new 50,000 square foot expansion of Terminal A. The lounge itself would be 18,000 square feet (largest centurion lounge).
American Express would pay a total of $121.5 million over the term of the lease and would also invest another $100 million for the terminal construction expansion. The lease would start January 1, 2022 and be expected to open August 1, 2023 (this is when the lease payments start).
Hat tip to TPG
Please leave your kids at home two years from now or just go to a different lounge thanks
and if i don’t?
Yeah, the anti-kids people can stay home. Such selfish people! Kids in lounges are usually pretty well behaved.
Oh my I got flashback from the DFW lounge. Insanity packed lounge with kids running around bumped into one of the attendants almost lost the dinnerware on that one.
Will it be before or after security? Unless there is a major improvement to inter-terminal transportation this is less exciting. Still, amazing to see them expanding!
There is a Walmart nearby! Everything makes sense now.
Eh what about ORD?
What will be first: the heat death of the universe or a Centurion at ORD?
EWR desperately needs a lounge, Priority pass is useless there. As much as everyone hates the airports, Newark is the best of the worst in the area
Great news for us United Flyers!
not that helpful for United since UA terminal is C
Yeah. United flyers gotta stick with polaris and united club
Already seeing datapoints for overcrowding at this lounge in 2023.
No more guests in 2023. To pay for the new digs, amex can award 1 coupon visit at the lounge for every 5K you spend on the plat card. No spend? No speakeasy for you.
If only. The way to get free guest access will be to spend $75,000 a year on Platinum and no other cards. Or just pay $50 per visit for each guest (and that includes kids).
If you value MR at 1.5 cents per point, and you are giving up 2.5% CB on general spend on other cards (assuming you could spend 75K annually), that’s at least $750 to get “free” guest passes. That’s 15 guests at $50. Cheaper to enroll up to 3 authorized users at $175 for the first 3 cards per year, which is what Amex wants. Save the heavy spend for other cards.
Porta potties inside the lounge or in the hallway next to?
wow, that will be great as my preferred airport is Newark. I also see more JetBlue flights leaving from Newark as well. I just hate JFK airport more than any airport in the World.
What’s so bad about JFK? I think it’s just fine.
Also think JFK is just fine though my 14 min walk to B56 the other day was annoying, even more so when i didn’t leave enough time to grab a coffee…the Subway / Airtrain for $10.50 or whatever ( it wasn’t a work trip ) which is my own fault for not leaving earlier.
Probably the best AMEX news I’ve heard in recent times. I prefer flying out of JFK for international flights because it’s closer to me, but this would make the voyage to EWR a lot more palatable.
