[Update] American Express Platinum 100,000 Points + 10x Grocery/Gas For 6 Months

Update 1/12/21: This link seems to be working consistently to get the 100,000 offer. Useful for those who had difficulty getting it to show. One reader found the link helped bypass the Amex popup issue as well. (Hat tip to reader Dheeraj) Works for me as well when I do it incognito, but others are saying this link is also not working for them. YMMV. Of course if you can get it to show via referral link (without popup) that would be best as your friend will get a bonus as well.

Another update: it’s worth checking first to see if you were targeted for the 125,000 + 10x prequalified offer.

Small update: a few readers point out a nifty tip on how to increase your odds of getting the offer to show – try at the top of the hour. I guess maybe they offer it a certain number of times each hour.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer (open incognito)

  • American Express is offering a new sign up bonus on the Platinum personal card, as follows:
    • Get 100,000 points signup bonus when spending $5,000 within 6 months.
    • Get 10x Membership Rewards points on Grocery and Gas purchases during the first 6 months of card membership, up to $15,000 in purchases; that’s 9x bonus on top of the regular 1x earn.

Not everyone is pulling up this offer as sometimes they show the 75k + 10x offer. Based on reader’s reports, I’m guessing anyone can get it with enough browser variations, private browsers, VPNs, etc.

Our Verdict

We posted yesterday about a similar deal with 10x + 75k + up to $300 in statement credits; this offer gives a higher 100k, but doesn’t have the $300 statement credit offer. Both of these are fantastic offers – you’ll just have to decide if you’d rather the extra 25,000 points or the opportunity for up to $300 statement credits. I assume most people will opt for the points, but some cashback people might go for the $300 statement credits.

Maxed out, you can get an extra 135,000 points from the gas/grocery bonus (9 x 15,000)! Even if we figure you wouldn’t have used a card that earns 1x; let’s figure you would have earned 4x (or the equivalent in another points currency), that’s still an extra 6x which is 90,000 points when maxed out.

And of course you’ll also get the $200 airline incidental credit (twice during the first year), $200 in Uber credits each year, the twice-annual $50 Saks credit (three times during the first year), and the tail-end of the $20 wireless and $20 streaming credits for the months of November and December.

Even if you won’t be able to use much of the 10x grocery/gas, this is obviously a terrific deal since typically 100,000 is about as good as you can get on Platinum on a public offer. Personally, I’d be very interested in this offer if I never had the Platinum bonus before.

If you’re thinking of applying, make sure you read these things everybody should know about American Express cards first. Amex does not officially match bonuses, but often does extend courtesy credits.

It looks like this offer is now 125k after 6k spend via incognito

Used the link with the incognito window and got the $100k offer. Before that it was always showing 75k, even in my AmEx targeted offers. thanks!

This should really mention about Amex’s clawback policy. Sounds like they can clawback your bonus if you close within 12 months. So basically you may get a $1000 credit on your card, but you paid $550 for your first annual fee, and then you got to wait until 12 months and pay a 2nd Annual Fee, thus $1100 dollars to earn $1000. That really sucks.

Steve Thank you for posting this. Can you tell me more? I have the 125k offer availble for 6mo but I am not sure I want it. The card doesn’t really suit me since I am not a traveler or have expensive tastes. I would be doing this only for the bonus and I would want to cancel after 1 year. I thought that you can get the 2nd AF refunded if you cancel within 1 month after 2nd AF posts? Is this not correct? Or it is just that some people don’t cancel in time right after the 2nd AF posts (in which case they are kind of screwed).

Also I heard the AF for this card is going to be rising….probably to ~$700. $550+$700 would wipe out the 125k points completely for me (since I would get no more than 1c per point most likely for the ways I’d want to use them).

I’d much rather prefer having P2 do the CSP but she doesn’t like playing the credit card game and doesn’t want to do it. No dice there I’m afraid.

Thanks for your thoughts!

You are correct. Not sure why OP is overreacting about this. Cancel after 12 months but within 30 days of your AF posting.

I just received my Amex Platinum card. I was able to get the 100k sign up bonus. However, in my account, it states that I have to spend $5,000 within 3 months instead of 6 months. I could have sworn the original link stated that I have 6 months to spend that amount. Is anyone else having this same experience?

Get the same. I got paper invitation saying 6 months, but account saying 3 months.

I’ve kept this offer in an opened pinned tab in my browser. Every time I open my browser I check to see if the offer ever changes from 75k points to 100k points. This morning it finally did so I went ahead and applied and was approved instantly. This is only my 2nd Amex card. I also have the Blue Cash Preferred.

the value depends on how much of the $5000 is spent on groceries. Could be a great card or a mediocre one.

I applied for a Plat on multiple occasions over the last two years and as recently as last week for a variety of different offers, but got the pop up every time. I’ve kept reasonably high use of my Amex cards before applying, all organic, no new Amex cards in the last three years and no new cards at all throughout 2020, but Amex still deemed me ‘suspicious’.

Got a mailer today with an RSVP code for this offer, and it bypassed the pop up!

Now I’m very excited to hit this bonus and have it clawed back immediately for some ‘violation’.

Does anyone know how to determine when your 6 months ends for the 10x? I opened on 11/12/2020. My next statement closes 5/14, but I moved my statement date a few weeks after I opened the card, so I don’t know if that is a valid indicator of anything.

I opened mine on almost the same day and I chatted with a rep to find that out. Took about 2 min and they told me May 17 would be my last day. Yours has probably already passed as well. For what it’s worth, the rep mentioned something about 183 days since application, so I don’t think it’s 6 calendar months specifically.

Any guess when this offer will end?
