As speculated previously, the change in the signup bonus for the “reimagined” American Express Platinum card has led to the return of referrals on the card.
Direct link to generate referral.
- Signup bonus is 60,000 Membership Rewards (MR) points after spending $5,000 in 3 months.
- Referrer gets 15,000 MR per referral, up to 55,000 MR per year.
- As far as we know, there are no active referrals for 40,000 MR after spending $3,000 in 3 months and it is not possible to generate one.
- Note that this offer is inferior to the incognito offer of 75,000 MR after spending $5,000 in 3 months.
The link here is the same link from our article “New American Express Referrals & Increased Signup Bonuses“. For me, the Platinum card is the last card in the list of cards for which I can generate referrals.
Of possible interest is that this referral bonus is set to end on September 29, 2018. Note that Platinum cardholders who have their annual fees posted after September 1, 2017 will be charged $550 instead of $450. It’s possible the end date means nothing, or it’s possible that some changes are being planned for another year and a half.
Please don’t post your referrals here. You can use the dedicated thread for that purpose that was created for our previous post about increased referral offers. Follow the instructions and post there.
Referral E-mail
Goodness gracious, the referral e-mail is overwrought! It starts when you see the subject line “Your friend has referred you for the reimagined Platinum Card”. And then you open the e-mail and get blasted in the face with this image:
Does this actually work on people?
Carolyn, I personally find the 60,000 point bonus with 15,000 to the referring person much better. Some people like myself who already have the Plat will refer their spouse. Thus, all together, my husband will get 60,000 after $5,000 spend, while I will get 15,000 immediately when he is approved. Net gain between us is the same 75,000 points, but we get 15,000 right away. Thank you, sirtheta!
+1.
“Note that this offer is inferior to the incognito offer of 75,000 MR after spending $5,000 in 3 months.”
So why are we even talking about the 60K offer in this post? I think anyone who would pass this link to their friend is no better than the paid credit card pusher who doesn’t tell you about a better offer. Don’t do this to your friend!
There are a number of people that have a very difficult time pulling up incognito offers*, and some of those people are willing to settle for lesser offers. In such a case, it’s a nice bonus to be able to use a referral (especially if you’re churning in two-or-more player mode). In general, though, you’re spot on 🙂
* remember that this offer in particular is what I call a “stage 2” incognito offer. Stage 0 is public offers, stage 1 is “lower” incognito offers ($150 Blue Cash Everyday or 15,000 MR ED), and stage 2 is “higher” incognito offers ($250 Blue Cash Everyday or 25,000 MR ED). Stage 1 aren’t difficult to pull up, but getting stage 2 offers to come up can take a lot of time for some people.
I generated a email that should have a link, but the email didn’t have a vaild link.
Anyone get a valid one yet?
All the links in the e-mail I was sent are valid.
Isn’t the referral offer inferior to incognito offer?
If I have access to both 60k referral offer and 75k incognito offer, any reason why I would go with the former?
Yes — good point & I’ve now noted such in the post. If you have access to the 75k / $5k offer, there’d be no reason to go for the 60k.
This would have been great for the Mercedes Benz since I think that AF doesn’t go up right? I checked my wife’s account but she only had SPG and Hilton referrals. No MB Plat referral.
The MB Plat annual fee has been increased; it just took a little while for it to roll over.
I’m actually not sure if you can refer people to co-branded Platinums or not. I’ve never seen anything about doing so, so my guess would be no?
Ah, thanks. Bummer.
