American Express Platinum Cards To Lose Boingo Internet Access

On the most recent statement for American Express Platinum cardholders there is the following note:

Effective May 1, 2019, Boingo Preferred Plan will no longer be a benefit on the Platinum Card®. Card Members who are enrolled in Boingo Preferred Plan as of 4/30/2019, will continue to have access to this benefit until 12/31/2019

It’s always sad when a benefit is removed. Personally I never really used Boingo so this isn’t a huge loss for me. What are your thoughts on this benefit being removed?

Does anyone else still have Boingo access through this perk? Not sure how my account is still active, but it works and says it is through the AmEx benefit…I can’t see a charge for it anywhere.

Love my Boingo. Hopefully they don’t remove it from the SPG Business card perks.

Amex Business Platinum cardholder here. My most recent statement closed on March 1. Nothing about Boingo on the statement anywhere I could find, so hopefully Business Platinum may be keeping this benefit?

I’ve only really used Boingo at airports and most of the ones I go to now don’t even have the premium option anymore. It was nice to hop on Boingo when it was there but I honestly didn’t notice too much of a speed difference. Still sucks to have a benefit removed though.

I use this A LOT internationally when I land to find spots to get local sim cards or layovers or to summon local rideshares, find shuttles, check in, etc. I also use it domestically because I have a limited data plan. I love this feature. Of course I don’t have a plat, I get it from the SPG BIZ. Between bingo and a free night cert I can’t decide if this card is worth its AF but that’s not relevant here.

It’s been occasionally useful. I ended up getting internet access in Germany and Hong Kong through it and there are sometimes still airports that use it. I’ll miss it less than if they got rid of the Saks or Uber credits though.

I actually got a bit of use out of it, so it will be a loss.

To those that couldn’t find a way to really utilize it, don’t use the app. The best way is if you just download the connection profile (It’s called Passpoint) to your phone, tablet, or laptop, and login once. After that it automatically logs you in to any available boingo network regadless of the network name. I have found quite a few airports run on boingo. I generally Boingo through the airport and then Gogo on the plane.

Also, here in Scottsdale, most Marriott family hotels , Extended Stays, Walmart & Sam’s, even local restaurants all run ok boingo.

was occasionally useful. I still have it on my USB altitude reserve so thatll hold me over until they remove it as well.

Just an FYI – Altitude Reserve has 12 annual GoGo passes, not Boingo

Almost all airports have free WiFi nowadays so not really a loss for anyone.

Pretty convenient for me as you can use it for TWC/Spectrum WiFi which is all over NYC. Hope it stays on old SPG/Bonvoy

Yes; to me, Boingo’s real value is/was its linkage to major carriers’ WiFi networks around the country and overseas, e.g., TWC/Spectrum (as you mentioned), Optimum/CableVision (which is all over Long Island), Verizon (see link below), and many more.
