The Fine Print

Our Verdict
American Express points are even more valuable than Hilton points even at a 1:2.6 rate so I don’t think this is worth considering. Previous transfer bonuses are:
- March 3 – March 31, 2022: 30% transfer bonus
- March 15th – June 15th, 2021: 40% transfer bonus
- December 2nd, 2020 – January 31st, 2021: 40% transfer bonus
- August 3rd – October 31st, 2020: 40% transfer bonus
- February 4th, 2019 – Unknown: YMMV deal for 10-50% transfer bonus
- September 27th – November 30th: YMMV deal for 30-50% transfer bonus
- January 2nd, 2018: Transfer rate increased permanently from 1:1.5 to 1:2
- October 24th – December 15th, 2017: 33% transfer bonus

What’s a better transfer ratio we’ve seen for Amex point transfers? Is there a forum for that on DoC?
Here you go: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/complete-list-of-american-express-membership-rewards-transfer-bonuses/
Hilton is the primary way I use my Amex points. I know that probably makes some AskSebby followers tear their hair out, but I’ve been getting great value. Just snagged 6 nights in Bora Bora for 600K. Cash value was $7,800 on the low end (will be higher if we get upgraded w/ Diamond status). That puts the value of Hilton points for this redemption at 1.3CPP and the Amex points at 3.4CPP. People get stuck on Chase/Hyatt because CPP, but there really is a lot more to consider. Every hotel currency has value if you know what you’re doing (good luck trying to use Hyatt points to visit Tahiti)!
Asksebby talks about aspirational travel redemptions a lot and you do get relatively high value at properties in places like Bora Bora or Maldives, not just on Hilton properties. You usually get much higher value than 3.4CPP on international business/flight class redemptions (easily 6-7CPP, sometimes over 10CPP). It really boils down to your personal needs when it comes to points redemption.
AS is focused on CPP to a fault. Take his video several months ago on high value Chase UR redemption options. Bringing up the Maldives example he used, it was touted as an amazing 11CPP. That sounds much better than the 2CPP that you’d get using Hilton points for the same trip. What he doesn’t consider is that you could do the same trip for less points with Hilton. If you utilize things like FNCs, 5th night free, and transfer bonuses, you actually end up using less MR to book the Hilton property than UR for the Hyatt property. Focusing solely on CPP can lead someone to using their points in a sub-optimal way and possible spend more points on the same trip than they would otherwise. Not to mention it is way easier to earn lots of Hilton points, which kinda cancels out the CPP advantage of Hyatt. Yeah, you can probably get 3X the CPP on average with Hyatt points, but I can earn Hilton 3X as fast, so it ends up taking a similar amount of spend to get the same amount of free nights
The Hilton FAQ says that a Hilton Honors account must be open for 30 days before you can add that person to points pooling. I’d like to use P2’s AMEX points w. this transfer bonus (just created a new Honors account for her today) then pool them with my points to make a booking. I fear that by the time 30 days goes by, though, that booking won’t be available.
Does anyone know if they “truly” enforce the 30-day thing?
They restrict points pooling within 30 days by throwing an error. I was in the same boat last year with them.
If you are an authorized user on P2’s account, you can transfer her points to your Hilton account from that authorized user profile.
Unfortunately, I am not, and I believe that route requires a 90 day wait. 🙁
I transferred 190 Amex Points. Pretty good deal. Booked an all inclusive for a week. Ended up with a 2.0 cpp value per MR point with fifth night free. Probably will transfer more before the month is out. This seems to best value of using MR points.
Nice – which property did you do? I was looking and it seemed like some of the prices had increased in the DR & Jamaica – just a few weeks ago priced at 80k for most dates – now all 100k+
Exact same thing for the Mexico PVR all inclusive. Jumped from 80k to 100k across all dates next fall through spring. I think it changed on April 1. A 5 day redemption will now be 80k higher. I’m not expecting it to fall but haven’t watched Hilton enough to know if this is a permanent increase.
This is certainly not a bad deal. Plenty of properties for 30K points a night so that is roughly 12000MR points. I see that as about $132 a night which can actually be a good savings vs cash rate often times.
Are you new to this game? You obviously do not know the true value of MR points. This is a pass for those knowledgeable.
To each their own. If 30k Hilton points lets me stay at a place I’ve always wanted to visit, then it’s totally worth it to me. Not everybody needs to fly ANA first class all the time to get the highest possible cpp.
ANA charges $750 in fuel surcharges and then they use 90000 MR points on top of that. That is a sucker redemption.
The other big catch with ANA is that you have to book round-trip, which is often impossible due to availability.
Avianca charges 90k and Air Canada charges 110k last time I checked. No fuel surcharges on either, and they allow one-way booking.
The cpp measuring contest continues… not everyone is aiming for premium airline tickets.
If it gets you to where you want and helps you save money, it’s a great redemption
I have a specific Hilton redemption in mind that will equate to 1.7 cpp+ for these AMEX points (after the x-fer bonus). Yes, I’ve already booked international business-class fare to get there using other AMEX points. Yes, I still have plenty left over.
“You can do better” only applies if you actually will use them for something better in the future. I’m not planning on running out nor am I planning to stop earning them, and, (last I checked) AMEX doesn’t pay interest on points just sitting there, so . . . I guess I’m “doing it wrong.”
Some loser troll comes in, posts one sentence, and it gets folks riled up.
As long as you’re happy with your redemptions, that’s all that matters. And seeing that you can keep earning them, NO better way to spend them then the way YOU want to.
I made redemptions in the past that weren’t the ‘most ccp’ but damn it if I didn’t score excellent trips to SE Asia and Australia.
LOL I never see anyone getting good return besides Hilton. They come up with a ridiculous value using over inflated cash rates for First and Business class tickets and they even pay fuel surcharges. The economy cash rate is what you should be using as your value.
Please enlighten us, the unknowledgeable ones, with your wisdom in the dealings and valuations of the membership rewards points.
Probably talking about the “value” of some business class ticket. Big deal, you sit in a special chair on a flight.
I travel by Amtrak, so airline redemption is useless
I know people see this as a mediocre redemption but this has been my go-to for MR for several years. If you’re staying at a resort and can do five nights, I consistently get values far above the .5 cpp most people use to estimate HH points. Hilton waives resort fees on redemptions, Marriot doesn’t.
I think it’s a good value for Hilton points but the general consensus is you can do a lot better using the MRs for other purposes (personally I’ve only found that doing international J/F flights but I can’t do those thesedays). I’ve gotten excellent use out of our Hilton points doing 5 nights at all inclusives – nearing 1cpp in a lot of cases
In other news did Hilton recently do another stealth devaluation?? Several properties I’ve been looking that the pricing was at 80k and are now showing 100k (rose hall and la romana AIs)
Definitely a stealth devaluation from Hilton that happened in April. Mexico PVR all inclusive jumped from 80k to 100k across all dates next fall through the end of the calendar. Im working on a SUB for that redemption so I’ve been eyeing it regularly. It would be nice to have a separate post on DOC to gather more days points on this topic.
Is it just me? Or are Hyatt points the only hotel currency that is remotely useful?
It’s not just you. It’s everybody with knowledge.
Hyatt points aren’t that good. Hard to redeem. They were good 5 years ago but now they are pretty bad. I like Hilton best.
I used to think the same. Doing some digging on types of vacations and destinations I’d like to visit really opened my eyes. CPP isn’t everything
I am thinking about applying for amex platinum card what are the best redemptions for points?
I am thinking about cooking food what is the best dish I can make?
I recommend some kind of seafood paella.
Best redemption is to book a flight to Nigeria. We treat all our visitors like royalty.
There’s a ton of articles written about it already
