Our Verdict
American Express points are even more valuable than Hilton points even at a 1:2.6 rate so I don’t think this is worth considering.
Most are saying redemptions in the US is a waste. I disagree. While international redemptions will be significantly better (and true for all hotel chains), there are plenty of sweet spots. Last year we did Signia Orlando for 6 days and got well over 1 CPP. I think for redemptions domestically, as long as you do your due research, there are properties that will make this transfer well worth it. Amex can’t transfer to Hyatt, but if you transfer at 1:2.6 Hilton, then redeem at at least 1 CPP in a high-end Hilton property (ex. Signia, Conrad, Waldorf), you get yourself a valuation that’s even higher than Hyatt’s. Especially useful for people who can’t travel abroad every year, but can do a Florida or Hawaii trip.
May I just say my 2 cents. Just stayed at the Ocean City (MD) Oceanfront Hilton over Labor Day. I think your just as good off paying cash. the cents/point values are consistently bad if you don’t so called “cherry pick”. Got use up my 900K Hilton points then move to Marriott and see for myself if it’s not greener or not. I’ve been consistently disappointed in Hilton Status domestically.
I just transferred some points and booked this same place for next summer, so I’m curious your reason for thinking the cash rate is better and if the hotel itself had anything to do with your reason (assuming you mean the All-Suites Hilton). The redemption rate at this hotel was 1.1cpp which I thought it was a pretty solid for Hiltons program.
I mean your first mistake was staying in OC lol I don’t even know why you’d use points for that.
They’re best used internationally.
Right?! The FT-approved move would be for this person to convince his family that for labor day weekend, don’t be so stupid that you would ever consider using points for a free resort that is within a drive and at a beach that sells out each year because families and children love it so much. The correct move is to make your family take a 7 hour flight internationally to some other country for Labor Day because there is a fraction of a cent-per-point better value to be had. Thats how you avoid mistakes!
This deal must not be available for everyone. I only see the usual 1:2 transfer ratio. And using that direct link, I get “This page is currently unavailable on this account”.
Another fan of these AmEx–>HH transfer bonuses. As a HH Aspire Amex cardholder the benefits for points stays as a Diamond at Hilton properties in Asia is fabulous. I always take advantage of 5th night free, free breakfast, fabulous upgrades, etc etc. If you never leave the US then it’s a marginal promo but for international travelers, this is frequently a slick deal.
I have gotten excellent (relatively) value from my Hilton points staying at high end hotels using 5th night free. Last stay was Conrad Tokyo, my 380k Hilton points got me 5 nights at a $700-$900 a night hotel, plus upgrade for having Gold status from my Surpass. All in value was well over $.01 pp. At that rate I’ll take 2.6 Hiltons for 1 Amex any day.
I think you are showing an outlier kind of redemption with Hilton. If you have a redemption to book that has a good return like that, then it makese sense. Merely on speculation, definitely not with Hilton. I find better value with Hyatt and even Marriott 5th night free. With Marriott 5th night, there can also be some good value.
speculative no. Is it easy to find those deals a year out it is.
Waldorf Astoria Hawaii minimum value with a very conservative value is 3.2 cents per amex. I did it when it was 40% and got even higher.
The other point being Hilton waives resort/destination fees on points stays. Which Marriott doesn’t do and Hyatt only does for upper tier elites. 5th night free and waived fees means it’s very easy to get great redemptions. It is a niche though.
Well saiid. Booked many 5th night free and the resort fee being waived is huge. Couple of the places are $50 a night before tax. One was 20% of the room rate which was just crazy.
Hyatt resort fees are waived if booked with points
I just booked 2 connecting rooms x 5 nights for 760k during spring peak. Very happy I was able to top up at 2.6x.
