American Express have announced a partnership with Uber (an alternative to Taxi’s – I personally find the service over priced but others are die hard fans) and you can now earn additional Membership Rewards points on all Uber transactions, you’ll also be able to redeem your Membership Rewards points for Uber travel.
- All American Express cards that earn membership rewards points will now earn 2 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent
- You can use your American Express membership rewards points to pay for your Uber rides. You get a value of 1 cent = 1 point
Our Verdict
As I mentioned, I’m not a huge fan of Uber. I think it’s an interesting model and certain locations (e.g Paris) definitely need a competitor to taxi’s as there aren’t enough Taxi medallions being given out. My main issue is that it’s almost always more expensive than a traditional taxi journey – lots of people are happy to pay for the convenience associated with Uber but I’m not among them. One of the main reasons Uber gets so much airtime is that they offer a generous referral bonus to anybody that promotes their service, meaning a lot of the top bloggers have enough credit with Uber to travel for free using the service.
It’s still nice to see American Express offering this bonus category and as there is no downside associated with this announcement it can only be good news for those who do use the Uber service. Have you used Uber before? What are your thoughts on the service?
