Update 9/16/24: TPG writes: “Note that you can use any Amex card as your payment method in order to use your Uber Cash — not just the card that carries the benefit. This means that if you have the American Express Green Card, for instance, you can use it to earn 3 points per dollar on your Uber ride.” Presumably they confirmed this with an AmEx or Uber contact.
Original Post 9/12/24:
AmEx is sending notification on the statements that the cards which come with a $10/$15/$25 Uber credit will require putting the balance of the Uber ride/meal on an AmEx card in order to use the credit.
Previously it was just a credit to your Uber account, and you could pay the balance with any card you choose. Beginning November 8, 2024, you’ll have to select the AmEx card as the payment option for the balance to cover the overage above the $10/$15 credit amount.
Hopefully it’ll still be possible to use multiple Uber credits on one ride/order when paying with an Amex card for the balance. We’ll see. Hopefully you can still use your Uber gift card balance for the ride and have the Amex card as the backup payment method (?).

“Support Team. I'm sorry to hear about this situation and for any confusion or frustration you may have experienced while trying to resolve it. Your patience is truly appreciated.
You can use your Monthly Premium Benefits on any trips or orders.
However, you'll need to set your Amex card as your payment method for the benefits to apply.
Please note that when you select an Amex card during checkout as a default payment method, it only utilizes the credits associated with that card.
When you want to utilize the other credit benefits you must set your other eligible Amex card as the default card and continue with your next order or trip request.”
This is what I got from Uber support (after 5 days of frustrating messages back and forth)
Uber finally got back to me, each Amex card has to be used separately, two cards, two transactions.
I sent my screenshot of the conversation to DoC earlier.
I have Amex Platinum and Gold. December credit worked fine, but yesterday only one credit from Platinum card was used and the credit from Gold card was left in my account. Getting Uber CS to do something is too tough. If it keeps going this way, likely will lead to closing Amex Gold.
I paid with my Amex Gold and the $10 credit didn’t apply for some reason. Am I doing something wrong?
Never had any issues prior to the change. I’m so tired of Amex’s shenanigans lately. First is taking away the Audible reimbursement without notifying card holders in advance and now this. I’m going to close all my Amex cards once their annual fees post.
worked today same as it always has re: uber cash – combined the amex credit with my existing uber cash balance no problem
anyone found out what the exact change is? I have already used up my credits before nov 8 but curious to know what the exact change is
did it yesterday. the credit shows up kind of separately. i had to change my payment method to my amex card, but then it still used the Uber cash (and showed it would in the confirmation screen). So Uber cash seems fine to combine. Only practical change seems to be you can’t use a different credit card to pay for the balance.
OK. so I see the Uber credits from Amex platinum cards didn’t come in. The Uber credits always came in my account beginning of each month but now you have to charge on the card first and then Amex will give a Uber credits?
no show either
Actually, the credits came in a few hours later. Later than usual but I was able to use the credits already. You should have credits by now. I guess as long as the payment method is Uber credits + Amex card, this will work. If there are enough credits, it won’t charge Amex card. If not, Amex cards will be charged for the remainder.
so you people have been using other payment methods on uber eats and utilizing the amex credits?
Yes primarily the SavorOne which would give you 10% back on the difference
AmEx gets more ways to earn swipe fees on its cards.
well, the SavorOne Uber partnership ends November 14, 2024 so the timing is about right
