Update 11/17/24: Offer is back through 12/31/24 (ht wishy123)
The Offer
Targeted offer, check your Amex Offers to find it
- American Express is offering 20,000 bonus Membership Rewards points if you spend $1,000 at Air France or KLM with a registered Amex card in one or more eligible transactions by 10/31/2019. Flights must originate from US & charged in USD.
The Fine Print
- Your enrollment of an eligible American Express Card for this offer extends only to that Card. Your enrollment does not extend to any other Cards that may be linked to the same Membership Rewards program account (such as Additional Cards).
- Offer valid only on flights booked through US websites www.klm.us and www.airfrance.us in USD will be included in the offer.
- Flight must originate in US and be charged in USD to qualify.
- Not valid for purchase made through partner sites, agents, affiliates and third parties. Excludes KLM Package Deals, City Pass Amsterdam, hotel bookings, car rentals, ground transportation, tours, airport transfers, equipment services, Shop@KLM, purchases of miles, and lounge access fees.
- Excludes Air France Music, Air France Saphir, Air France Shopping, convention/conference/seminar services, baggage drop off, group reservations, La Boutique Air France, parking, Stress Free Flying workshop, flight crew training, Flying Blue Store, KLM Jet Center, KLM Wanna Gives.
- Excludes bookings made via a travel agent.
- Purchases may fall outside of the offer period in some cases due to a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction (for example, the purchase date for online orders may be the shipping date).
Our Verdict
Offer seems to be widely available on Membership Rewards-earning cards. This is obviously an excellent deal for someone planning on paying cash for an Air France flight originating in the US. Could make it more enticing to use them as well versus other alternatives.

can you buy points and get the bonus?
Anyone know if taxes/fees on award tickets would qualify? (I know…be the data point…)
I believe it does. If you want to hold off, I added the offer to my card on Sat and used it to cover taxes and fees for award booking yesterday. Can report back if / when points post. So far, the charge does not look any different from what it would if this was a fully paid ticket, shows as ‘AIR FRANCE NEW YORK CITY’.
Update: got email from AMEX confirming the that the offer has been used.
Final update: points posted ~ 2 weeks after the award booking was made.
Yes it does. Enrolled offer 10/4. Award flights booked 10/5. Did not get Amex email confirming offer. Points hit account 11/10.
Does this work on refundedable tickets?
Is there any reason why it wouldn’t work? The only risk is clawback.
You have to pay by October 31st. Do you have to fly by then? If not, what is the last date you can fly?
Killer deal, and in the nick of time for both my booking and the 40% transfer bonus to Avios (assuming the bonus points post in time). 28k Avios for a $1k booking is like getting 40-45% back.
Do Avios and KLM work as partners/affiliates? I am confused, how it’s a killer deal
Book on AF/KLM, pay with Amex, get MR, xfer to BA with current transfer bonus
He’s saying that he will receive 20,000 AMEX MR that he can transfer to British Airways at a 40% bonus to get 28,000 Avios.
No, I’m referring to transferring the entire 20k MR bonus from the offer to BA with a 40% transfer bonus. The transfer bonus ends October 1st.
This is separate from the base MR you earn on the card (e.g. 5X on Platinum), any concurrent offers (e.g. 2500 MR/$2500 spend), and the crediting of the flight itself (to Flying Blue or Delta or wherever).
Comes just when I had booked a $2K+ ticket with Sapphire Reserve 2 days ago. smh! Added the offer to my gold card anyways.
