The Offer
Check your AmEx Offers for one of the following offers for Gas Stations:
- Get a $3 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend a minimum of $35 in one or more transactions at a U.S. gas station by 12/31/2021. Limit of 5 statement credits (total of $15). See terms for exclusions.
- Get 3% back as a statement credit by using your enrolled Card to make purchases at a U.S. gas station by 12/31/2021. Limit of $15 in total statement credits. See terms for exclusions.
The Fine Print
- Offer valid only for eligible purchases at gas station locations in the U.S.
- An “eligible purchase” means a purchase made with your enrolled Card at a U.S. gas station location by 12/31/2021.
- Offer excludes online purchases and marina fuel or any type of commercial fuel (e.g.- jet fuel) purchases.
- “Gas station” means a merchant that is primarily in the business of selling gasoline to consumers.
- A gas station may sell other convenience items, but its primary business must be selling gasoline to consumers.
- The following are NOT considered gas stations: superstores, supermarkets, and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline.
- Not valid for corporate card transactions.
Our Verdict
These offers are being found across various cards by many people. The $3 offer is about 9% back and it even combines multiple transactions to meet the $35 threshold, so I’d consider that better than the 3% offer. Should stack nicely with the $5/$25 Exxon deal (just remember that that deal is only for premium gas).
Also worth pointing out: the terms are clear that this offer is not limited to pump purchases, and will include convenience stores that code as Gas Stations. I believe Visa is more generous than AmEx with considering even stand-alone convenience stores to be gas stations, but there might be some that AmEx considers Gas Stations, especially convenience stores which also operate a Gas Station.

I couldn’t find the offer on my amex.
Worthless. I can save $3 on a fillup just by stopping at the right station
Why not do both then?
The terms exclude Costco, and wouldn’t work regardless as they only take Visa.
Grocery store gas stations will likely be excluded as well.

Sam’s Club gas has a gas MCC. Sam’s Club gas codes as gas with Chase and Citi. So, why this carveout with Amex? It’s the primary reason the Business Gold is a non-starter for me.
Barclay Wyndham also for 8 points.at Sam’s.
Very weak, not even 10% off, you can get that everyday with gas gift cards.
YMMV. Not all gas station chains have avenues to discounted gas gift card. Some of the small chains/indies around here have better prices.
How does that stack up vs Costco / Sams Club? I find the prices in my area are usually 10-20% higher than the wholesale clubs.
You guys pay for gas???

Driving an EV now. I guess my only option is stocking up on gas station food and Monster :)))
I only drive a Lambo nowadays, very fuel efficient. I used to drive my Bentley Mulsanne when I cared about gas prices. I guess I will use the $3 off offer on my Amex Centurion on gas station sushis.
Better off using a Gulf/or most other gas GC from grocery stores with 5% back and BCP 6% back. In my area you pay an extra 10 cents per gallon at least for credit card. Gas gift cards do not charge extra. You get the cash price at the pump.

Shell, at least the last 2 times I was redeeming rebate/gifted gas cards, charges the debit/credit price.
qmc This issue is currently being litigated in California. https://www.paymentsjournal.com/shell-lawsuit-asks-is-a-gift-card-the-same-as-cash/
Shell’s ability to do this depends on the law of your particular state.
Interesting. I think the ones I had totaled about $20, so maybe a $2 class action settlement payment will actually make me whole for once!
that’s why I use Gulf. Shell In CT/upstate NY charges cash price for Shell gift cards here. But shell is always 10-15 cents higher than Gulf.
Can stack with Upside app
