Amex Offers: Spend $100 at Walmart or Target, Get $30 Back, Repeat 5x!

The Offer

  • Spend $100 or more at Walmart or Target with a registered Amex card and receive a $30 statement credit. Repeat up to 5 times and get the $30 credit for each one.

walmart target amex offer

This offer is targeted. Most people/cards don’t have it, while many people were able to find it on some of their cards. It’s not available via Twitter, only by saving the targeted offer in your Amex login. See How Does American Express Decide Who Receives What AmEx Sync Offer?

The Fine Print

  • Valid until 7/31/15
  • Valid in-store only
  • $100 must be in one transaction

Our Verdict

Wow, this is some offer! In a couple of ways, it even beats out the Smart & Final offer.

I wasn’t lucky to find it yet on any of my cards; hopefully you’ll have better luck.

Tips to maximize (in the post-REDbird era):

  • Buy Walmart gift cards in $100 increments and resell them for 90% of its value. Total profit per registered Amex card – $100 (20 x 5).
  • Buy $500 Visa gift cards at Walmart for $505 (?) and split the charge between 4 separate registered Amex cards. The Walmart POS allows 4 cards in one transaction. [UPDATE: Another report indicates that there is a 2-card limit.] Don’t split-tender using the same card twice since that may not work or it may be combined. Total profit per registered Amex card – $143.75.
  • Buy $400 Visa gift cards for $406 at Target and split it between 4 separate registered Amex cards. Total profit per registered Amex card – $142.50.
  • Or just go shopping!

Has anyone tried to do this more than 5 times? After I use an amex offer it shows up as redeemed in the offers added to card section, but, for this one, it still says the offer is added to my card after receiving the 5 statement credits.

2 Wal-marts now claim you must use a debit card to buy Wal-mart gift cards. I can understand this restriction for Visa/MC/Amex cards but this is plain dumb for in house gift cards.

Had this offer on one of my cards, so I bought 5x $100 visa gift cards at Target yesterday.

Just went to load them onto my redbird at another target this morning, and whenever I swipe the gift card, it comes up as credit and asks for my signature. There’s no debit option, and the cashier can’t do anything to make them run as debit. All the cards are issued by Target Bank. According to the website, I should be able to set a pin when first using them, but I never even get the debit option.

Any thoughts? Never had a problem loading any other prepaid debit cards onto my redbird.

I had the same problem today David. I got that signature option also. I’m assuming it’s because it’s not issues by Bancorp or MetaBank?

Any help?

I had problems before the POS update, and I’ve since had no problem using Simon Mall VGCs, so it’s definitely something specific to those cards and Target. I ended up using them to buy a $500 VGC at Office Max (since they worked as debit there) and loaded that at Target. Ate into my profit but I still made a lot of money off the deal.

Just saw an ad in the newspaper (Newsday) today for Astoria Bank – $250 welcome offer for switching checking account to their Simple (avg mo bal of $2500 or more or $10,000 min bal in combined deposit accounts) or Simple+ (min bal of $25,000 in combined deposit accounts). Also, you need to either have direct deposits of $250 or more or make three bill payments of at least $25 each month using their Online Banking, for three consecutive months within the first four months of account opening. Cash bonus of $250 will be credited to the account within 30 business days after receipt of the third month’s direct deposit or bill pay.

Does Walmart allow buying GC with credit card? I tried buying $0-$500 variable AMEX gift card and load it with $300 cashier said debit or cash only. Should I go around and try some other cashier?

It varies by the store sometimes. One of the Walmart near me allowed to buy Giftcards with CC (sometimes after checking ID) while other Store few miles away says Cash or Debit only.

Sometimes offers get rolled out over a few days rather than all at once, so keep checking your accounts. It may yet appear.

Right, here’s a problem worth mentioning.

Say you see it offered on one card of 5 (which are on the same account logon)
Amex is still rolling out the offers though and they’re about to put it 2 more of your cards. You don’t know this of course and in your haste and greed, you click on the one card. Once that’s done the other offers would typically fail to appear since in the usual sense you can only get one offer per account (not card). There are ways around this but you need to open multiple tabs and have all the offers showing at that time.

Not on ANY of our 14 primary cards…

Why only $400 Visa at Target and not $500 like Walmart? Will Target not let you split it among 5 cards?

I have 1 card eligible, buying 5 $100 cards individually swiped would trigger the $30 x 5.

Wouldn’t this work at both Target and Walmart? Or is $400 the max you can buy at Target per day?

This is nice, 30% is nothing to sneeze about, however IMO the 50% Smart & Final deal was better at 3x per card, and was on accounts and by twitter.
