Amex Plenti Credit Card will Be Discontinued in February 2018

Amex sent out a letter telling cardholders that Plenti Amex cards will be discontinued, and all cards will be closed on February 16, 2018.

We are writing to tell you about an upcoming change to your Plenti Credit Card from Amex (“Card”). On February 16, 2018, the Plenti Credit Card will be discontinued, and as a result, your Card Account will be cancelled.

We noted in October that the card is no longer available for signup, a lead-up to the decision to pull it completely. Oddly, it seems they aren’t offering to convert the card to something else like the Blue Cash Everyday. Maybe they don’t feel the Plenti credit card demographic is profitable? I can see people being upset they signed up for a card only to have it close completely a year later. They have a long FAQ which you can read if long-winded is more your speed.

A broader question is what’s happening to the Plenti program as a whole in the long term. Lots of partners left them recently, and they openly admit discussions about the future of the program. The assumption is that it’ll end soon entirely. My guess is they’ll announce it’s demise sometime in a few months and then give us until the end of 2018 to redeem points. We’ll see.

Let me address the accusations regarding the Plenti program.

There are some people here that are saying nobody uses plenti. I’ve been in several Rite Aids and ExxonMobil stations and people are buying things left and right and they always ask to scan the plenti card so you get your points.

I am one of those that got the Credit card this year months before finding out the credit card will be discontinued. Chances are a lot of people were not using the card or not using AT&T as their cell phone carrier (Plenti ended their affiliation with AT&T in October) and this is their decision to stop using the credit card. You also need people to have late payments, interest, etc. in order to have a profit on any credit card. I’ve paid all my bills on time, I’ve had no interest. Chances are nobody was applying for the credit card that has debt and/or there was a lack of interest in using the credit card since many people pay with cash [lots of employers pay their employees in cash rather than checks].

My Mobil charges the Credit price to use an Exxon Mobil gift card, so I never go there. This program was too limited in FL, only place to really get a lot of points was Winn Dixie Grocery, and the suck compared to Publix, WMT, or TGT for prices

Plenti redemptions were scarce. Earning points average. Exxon in New Jersey runs 10-15 cents higher than other brands for same gas ( please don’t say it’s better I worked for Getty Oil). I also have Verizon and there partner was ATT.

Glad to hear i wasn’t the only person shocked there’s no conversion option. I’ve already made a fuss about it. I am also a Platinum card holder, and i find it incredibly frustrating Amex is taking Plenti card holders for granted. Discontinue the product if it’s what is best, but tossing the account holders out with it is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

You will no longer be able to earn plenti points at rite aid beginning in 2018. Can still redeem. Memo posted at iheartriteaid dot com.

Interesting. I thought the Plenti program had so much potential. You see, every retailer and their mom wants one of the infamous “reward” programs in order to gather data about their consumer spending habits. The problem is, it costs a lot of money to roll these programs out – so if you can do it on a contractual basis with someone already has experience with it (In this case, AMEX Plenti), then that would be way easier than trying to build up your own in-house program.

I think the Plenti program overall failed because… well… the rewards sucked ass. I never felt obliged to fill up my tank at an Exxon station, because there were plenty of cheaper fill-ups – and the rewards were just pure dog shit.

Maybe I’m crazy though, that has just been my experience.

They’ve tried a lot of special offers on Exxon Mobil. Things like 200 points when you buy 8 gallons and 200 points if you redeem for rewards (minimum 100 points). Since I purchase Exxon GC through eBay to unload eBay bucks I pay the cash price.

I recently joined plenti — found the program utterly miserable to use….. a constant time-suck. (wasted far too much time with reps on the phone, for the most difficult to use benefits)

ps, very nice to see a “person of interest” somewhere in this space name that spade…. that a top driving force behind these “rewards” program has been big brother’s unquenchable thirst to suck up data from the mindless sheep…. From facebook to Shopyourway to swagbucks.. I’ve long made it a point to be flagrantly “dissumulate” to the computer behind those endless shopping promos….

No product conversion option?

Mind you, did anyone ever apply for the card? Since they’re abandoning their customers, I doubt Plenti will be around long.
