Amtrak has added the ability to redeem companion and upgrade coupons online and via the Amtrak app. Previously you had to either call in or visit a physical location to get these applied. Full details on how to apply these coupons can be found here. Importantly the upgrade coupons will work fine on existing reservations. This is good news for holders of the Bank of America credit card, as this card offers a complimentary companion coupon and one-class upgrade. The sign up bonus on that card is currently sitting at 30,000 points.

I used one of my companion passes on-line to book my husband and me on Amtrak a couple of weeks ago. Good to know I can apply the upgrade on-line too. Thanks for the heads-up.
I made it into DoC?! I feel like a celebrity!
=), you are a celebrity
Like everything else at Amtrak “of late,” this simple fix was looonggggg overdue. Now if only they could get the long-haul trains to arrive anywhere remotely close to their scheduled times….. (long experiential rant suppressed)
I saw this option online earlier in the year but it wasn’t showing any coupons when booking 3 round trip tickets. I still had to call in. I forget which one was the case, but you either needed to just book 2 tickets or book each leg separately for the coupons to appear.
