ANA Removes Fuel Surcharges On Rewards

ANA has reduced carrier imposed surcharges to $2 on round trip tickets to and from The U.S (this is only on flights from U.S. to Japan and vice versa). Previously taxes and fees would price out at $250 or more, now they are pricing at less than $60 round trip. You can transfer to ANA from American Express Membership Rewards at a rate of 1:1.

Just booked two separate tickets tickets using VA miles. JFK-NRT and fuel surcharge was $102 and NRT-JFK for $122. Each for the month of October 2022. This was a lot more than the $54 for a RT I had booked using the same miles for a flight in 2020 and early 2021 and the $48 OW from NRT-JFK that was booked for Mar 2022 that I had to cancel.

does anyone know if you’ll get refund on an existing itinerary using virgin miles? Or does one have to cancel, eat the fee and then rebook?

I wouldn’t hold my breath on a refund via VS. I’ll take the hit though, it’s a $26k ticket for $230 in fees. I’ll just open a new bank account and call it even.

Had a flight booked for April and called to ask about difference of fuel charge I paid for one F ticket from NYC to Tokyo and they said that I had to change the ticket date if theres availability to a different date or else there is nothing they can do in terms of getting the difference back.

Wow. This is f*n news!

I just hope these changes (ANA, EK) are not temporary for COVID!

Edit – I guess I got excited too soon. Is it only between US and Japan? Tried LAX to NRT to DEL (Delhi) then DEL to NRT to LAX and it has fuel surcharge (All ANA flights !! 🙁

That will be more miles. It makes no sense. LAX to NRT has not fuel surcharge now. NRT to DEL has no fuel surcharge. But LAX to DEL (LAX – NRT – DEL all ANA) has crazy $650 fuel surcharge. WTF ANA!!?? I hope is a temp issue they might fix? Or may be call explain and book? Makes no sense

Anyone try calling and seeing if they retroactively refund? I just booked two flights last month (IAH-HND) and paid $460 in fuel surcharges and if possible would like that back without the risk of losing my tickets.

I paid $230 for my open jaw award ticket and ANA sent me an email saying they will be refunding $171.95. I didn’t contact them.

Thank you so much for flying with ANA.

We have processed an EMD refund at your request.
Please check the “Statement of Refund” that we are sending you.

*ANA will process your refund request within 7 business days. However, the actual amount of time that will be required for the refund to be credited to your account will vary according to the terms and conditions of the relevant card issuer or financial institution.

Thanks for this amazing datapoint! Did you book directly through ANA? And also when did you book your flight and what dates was the flight for? Was it also for US -> Japan? Sorry for all the questions, just want to get all the information before making my next move. (Weird they said they will process a refund at your request when you didn’t even contact them).

I booked with points directly on the ANA website from USA to Japan for next year. All my flights are operated by ANA. When I look in my ANA account this ticket now shows some $58 in taxes and surcharges instead of the $230 when I booked my ticket last month.

TPG says “It’s also worth noting that if you book an ANA flight using another rewards program currency (i.e. Virgin Atlantic), you also won’t be liable for fuel surcharges. “

If you don’t have enough points to do both you’re doing it wrong.
