The Fine Print

Those eligible to purchase from the Apple Store for Education Individuals include faculty, staff, students and parents as follows:

  • K12 – Any employee of a public or private K-12 institution in the United States is eligible, including homeschool teachers. In addition, school board members who are currently serving as elected or appointed members are eligible. PTA or PTO executives currently serving as elected or appointed officers are eligible.
  • Higher Education – Faculty and staff of Higher Education institutions in the United States; and students attending, or accepted into a Higher Education institution in the United States are eligible to purchase. Purchases from the Apple Store for Education Individuals are not for institutional purchase or resale.
  • Higher Education Parents – Parents purchasing on behalf of their child, who is a student currently attending or accepted into a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States, are eligible to purchase.

Our Verdict

Apple always offers special pricing for students and educators; this Airpods offer is an added freebie on top of the ordinary discounts. If you’re buying a $2,000+ Mac, the added Airpods isn’t a huge discount, but if you are buying a $479 iPad the free Airpods is quite a nice bonus. Of course, be sure to compare prices to ensure you are getting the best deal overall, in any case.

Apple is also offering increased shopping portal rewards, at the time of this writing, with 5x miles on many portals (typically it’s more like 1x miles).

Rakuten didn’t work for MacBooks, although I will receive some points for the Airpods, but I received a $10 bonus.

I ordered an iPad Pro about 5 weeks ago through the normal Apple retail site. I wasn’t aware of the Education Store at the time. The iPad was for my daughter, which she plans to use in college classes next semester. After seeing this post I contacted Apple Customer Service and they credited the price difference between the retail and education price and then asked if I wanted to take advantage of this Airpod offer.

I ordered a MacBook Air on June 1st (hasn’t arrived yet).

Contacted them chat, told them my order number, linked the promotion page and they were able to apply the promotion to my current order.

Options for types of airpods where given via chat, additional amounts would be placed on card from current order.

Apple doesn’t actually seem to care that much if you’re a student or not. Anyone can make a purchase through the education store and get the student discount and the promo items and it’s been like this for years. The edu store discounts tend to about the same as buying from a third-party authorized reseller when they have a typical sale, although sometimes the reseller go even lower for clearance models.

As confirmed by others, they don’t usually check. But it is a gift for a family member in school, so I have their email handy if they ask.

And yes, @parrothead, original order was via education store

Nice! Last time, I got the Wireless Beats when I bought the MacBook air. Looking to get an iPad for grad school so this may be a better incentive

Be advised that a huge change to the Mac lineup is expected for 2021. They are anticipated to replace their Intel processors with their own ARM processors. If you want maximum longevity from your Mac, wait for the next generation.

My 2013 MacBook Pro works with the latest MacOS. I doubt this current generation gets software updates for that long given the big operating system change that’s expected.
