The Offer
- VantageWest is offering a bonus of up to $300 when you open a new checking and credit card. This is actually interesting, as the VantageWest Connect Rewards Card earns 5% in rotating categories. You need to spend $1,500 on the credit card you open. The bonus you receive depends on the checking and credit card you open:
- Obviously you’ll want to open the Connect Rewards card as it earns 5% back in rotating categories.
The Fine Print
- Promotion runs Feb. 13 – Dec. 31, 2019. Second qualifying product must be opened within 30 days of first qualifying product.
- Minimum opening deposit of $20.00.
- Both qualifying products must remain open for at least 6 months or you may be responsible for reimbursement of any bonus awarded.
- Account must be in good standing.
- The Rewards Points bonus will be credited to your rewards account within 30 days of the date the last requirement is met.
- Cash rewards will be awarded as points ($100=10,000 points).
- Limit one new checking account and one new VISA, per membership and per member.
- Promotion offered only for new checking accounts and credit cards and does not apply to increases, conversions or re-opening of a closed account or credit card. Certain restrictions may apply.
- See Vantage West Rewards terms and conditions for details and restrictions of the program. Accounts subject to approval. Federally insured by NCUA.
- Members with an existing Checking or Visa are not eligible for the bonus
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Essential Checking
If you open this with the rewards card you get a $200 bonus and this account has no monthly fees.
Premium Rewards
If you open this with the rewards card you get a $300 bonus. If you have an average daily balance of $3,000 or combined average daily balance of $10,000+ or monthly direct deposit of $750 the monthly fee of 12 is waived.
Early Account Termination Fee
Both checking and credit card account need to stay open for six months to avoid having the bonus clawed back.
Our Verdict
Best way to think of this is just a credit card bonus that requires also opening a checking account. The credit card itself is actually useful and doesn’t normally come with a sign up bonus so I think now is definitely the time to sign up for it. I’ll add this to our list of best credit card bonuses.

Opened CC first w/o issue.
Then opened checking account a week later. Tried online but email said they weren’t able to open it. Went in branch and opened without issue.
Hit MSR 1/13/20. Bonus paid out 1/14/20
In Maricopa county. Opened up CC first, received a call to submit the latest 2 paystubs and then approved and requested to open membership (with checking account if needed).
Opened membership and checking accounts with Citi AAdvantage CC for $2000 initial funding (posted as purchase) online.
Waiting for the Credit Card though for 10 days…
this is listed under the ‘Best Business Card Bonuses’ for May, however I don’t see anywhere in the details here or on vantage west that this is a Business card.
Any updates on this? Can this be for personal?
Update: I opened it for personal. There’s nothing on the website asking for business information.
I think they actually added something to the terms a few weeks after the promo started :(. Members with an existing Checking or Visa are not eligible for the bonus. I don’t remember seeing that when this promo was introduced and I wish I would have read the terms closely again when applying since I have their regular none rewards card, which according to this disqualifies me now. Not cool Vantage
Sorry to hear that, added to our fine print section to make clearer
I was able to churn this despite the wording saying “Promotion […] does not apply to […] re-opening of a closed account”. Previously I had closed a Rewards Checking account. That account type had been renamed to Premium Rewards Checking when I re-opened. So I’m still not certain it would be considered “re-opening” if there hadn’t been any such changes in the interim.
“Both qualifying products must remain open for at least 6 months or you may be responsible for reimbursement of any bonus awarded.”
Does this mean that you would not be able to downgrade from Premium Rewards to Essential Checking?
I am wondering the same thing.
I don’t see any links on the promotion page to open the accounts. Are we supposed to do these separately from their product pages and assume the promotion will happen automatically?
Here are two data points for bonus posting. Player 2 and I both did VantageWest checking account bonuses last year (no credit card requirement).
P1: Account opened 4/24, met requirements 5/25, bonus posted 6/12 (18 days)
P2: Account opened 6/11, met requirements 7/19, bonus posted 8/14 (26 days)
Are you located in AZ?
Are you located in AZ?
Yes, I’m in AZ.
You opened the same checking account as last year? So that doesn’t count as “re-opening of a closed account”?
Sorry, I had misread and thought you had received this bonus as well.
I also got the checking bonus last year. Posted 18 days after meeting the reqs.
